For Black Women: Civil rights equals voting rights. ~ While white women celebrated the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, Black women still had to fac...e hurdles because of voter suppression tactics like poll taxes and literacy tests. Despite the successes of the suffrage movement, black women were still disenfranchised until the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Here in Ventura County black women in many of our organizations have been at the forefront of voting and civil rights. Here is one notable crusader. Despite facing segregation and racism the late Ruth Gibson was an advocate for civil and voting rights and a native of Ventura County. The City of Ventura designated Aug. 11 as Ruth Gibson day in honor of her service to local organizations. Though we are a week late we feel it is never to late to honor great women and what they fought for.
