Security Special: Make Yourself Scam-Proof!
Apple is rolling out a major change to its iOS tracking permissions which allows iPhone users to CHOOSE whether they want to OPT IN or OPT OUT of data tracki...ng across apps and websites owned by other companies. This will impact TWO major areas: 1) the ability to properly measure ad performance, and 2) the ability to properly retarget users (based on device-level targeting). Facebook has been fighting this change hard. From a business standpoint, yes, there will be some impact. However, from a user standpoint, it's a good thing to have more transparency and to be given a choice whether to be tracked or not. Let's simplify and break it down! First, an IDFA (Identifier for Advertisers) is a unique identifier for mobile devices and is used to target and measure the effectiveness of advertising on a user level across mobile devices. Currently, about 70% of IOS users share their IDFA with app publishers. After the iOS 14 change where users see a pop up notification inviting them to opt in or out of tracking, it’s estimated that this number will drop to 10% to 15%. Our Latest Apple News & Tech Help for August
Worth a reminder! I just got a phone call from (800) 243-6664. When I answered, a recording said it was Apple, that there was suspicious activity on my iCloud account, and that I should press 1 to talk to an Apple rep. This is an old scam (https://www.inc.com//no-apple-isnt-calling-to-alert-you-to), with two new differences: - The caller ID didn't claim it was Apple calling me (-10 tech points to the scammer).... - The robocall didn't give me a (non-Apple, obvs) number to call for more info; its "press 1 to talk to a person" bit appears to be a new wrinkle (+50 tech points to the scammer). You should be aware that this is happening. But most importantly, you should be aware that Apple will *never call you unsolicited* (https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT204759). If you get a call like this? Just hang up.
