The Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools Office hosted the third annual Tuolumne County Mock Trial Competition on January 19 and January 21, 2021. The students, judges and scoring attorneys all participated in a virtual format. The Mock Trial program features high school students arguing a fictional case created by the Constitutional Rights Foundation as either the prosecution or defense team. Students serve as attorneys, witnesses, a bailiff and a clerk. Tuolumne Cou...nty Judges preside over the case and local attorneys are the scorers. This year’s case was People v. Croddy, with the defendant charged with burglary, aiding and abetting, and accessory after the fact. The Mock Trial program was created to help students acquire a working knowledge of our judicial system, develop analytical abilities and communication skills, and gain an understanding of their obligations and responsibilities as participating members of our society. Four high schools competed in this year’s event. Summerville High School and Tioga High School from Tuolumne County; De La Salle High School from Concord, and Venture Academy from Stockton. Summerville High School is coached by teacher Shane Patey. Attorney coaches are: Brad Young, James Webster, and Melissa Knobloch. Tioga High School is coached by teacher Emily Hanchett and Attorney Minet Adams. De La Salle High School is coached by Michael Appel. Venture Academy is coached by Spencer Wright and Attorney Matthew Wright. Presiding judges were the Honorable Donald Segerstrom, the Honorable Kate Powell-Segerstrom, and the Honorable Laura Krieg. Scoring attorneys were: Samantha Arnerich, Dana Gross, Eric Hovatter, Clint Parish, Carolyn Woodall, Norma De Santiago, Leah Alvarez, Lindsey Terry, and Retired Judge Doug Boyack. The Tuolumne County winning team is Summerville High School. They will receive the perpetual plaque and will advance to the state competition, which will be held virtually March 18-March 21, 2021. For more information about the Summerville High School Mock Trial program, contact: Shane Patey at: [email protected]. Tioga High School competed for the first time, with an excellent performance. For more information about the Tioga High School Mock Trial Program, contact Emily Hanchett at: [email protected]. The Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools Office wishes to thank the Judges and Attorneys for volunteering their time and sharing their expertise to help make this event successful. We would also like to share the Courtroom Artist's, Maggie McBride, depiction of the event.

The salmon eggs have emerged into alevins! These are tiny fish with a nutrient-rich yolk sac attached to their bellies. Usually, at this stage they will remain in the gravel so they are difficult to see. There are 95 in our tank! How many can you find? https://www.tcsos.us/salmonids/
