Temple Beth Shalom of Long Beach, California 12.11.2020

Dear Friends, Temple leadership has been involved in vigorous discussion about the proper response to the threat of COVID-19. Many other Jewish institutions, including our friends at Temple Israel, will be immediately ceasing public events and restricting access to their building. I believe it is essential that Temple Beth Shalom also ceases public operations (including services)effective immediately at least through next week (3/22). The Board will re-evaluate and provid...e an update to all members next week based on the latest guidance from health experts. While this feels like a difficult and frustrating decision, all evidence suggests that strict social distancing is absolutely critical to the success of containing the virus. For instance, Carolyn Cannuscio, the director of research at the Center for Public Health Initiatives at the University of Pennsylvania advises, People should avoid gathering in public places. People should be at home as much as possible. The measures that have worked to get transmission under control or at least to bend the curve, in China and South Korea, have been extreme measures to increase social distancing. Currently, the City of Long Beach strongly recommends canceling any gathering of over 10 people that involves members of vulnerable populations (which includes many of our members). Please find the press release from the city here: http://longbeach.gov//long-beach-cancels-all-large-scale-/ I would also encourage all members to read the attached article on the importance of social distancing: https://www.theatlantic.com//coronavirus-cancel-ev/607675/ Because many of our congregants are particularly vulnerable to the virus, our moral obligation to protect the community is clear. We are a family. And in this trying time it is more essential than ever that we care for one another. Please, make phone calls to friends in the coming days and weeks. Be aware of your health and the health of those around you, and be particularly sensitive to those in our community who are at greatest risk. Be well, Jeremy Glatstein, PhD President, Temple Beth Shalom
