A DATE TO REMEMBER... (& a FREE Turkey!) Last night, my son Hudson planned a special date with his mom at Flemings Restaurant in El Segundo. He just wanted to connect with her and have some mom/son time before he left on his vacation to Hawaii this Saturday....Continue reading

I thought I would write an e-mail about the election since anything else I write about will probably go in one ear and out the other. Let’s face the facts. Unless you have been living in a cave somewhere out on a deserted island, everyone has been talking about, thinking about, and wondering about the outcome of our country’s election. It is hard not to be thinking about what is going to happen soon, as well as what will happen in the years to come....Continue reading

I know today is Halloween and there are a lot of people who are going to have scary thoughts in their minds tonight, but a scarier thought I had is all the people we treated this week who were suffering with pain and had no idea how to get rid of it. No one likes pain. I don't like to have pain even for a few hours....Continue reading

The other day I was playing baseball in the front yard with my 9 and 6-year-old. As we were playing, two guys in a pickup truck stopped in front of my house and interrupted our game. Excuse me, sir, I noticed your lawn needs fertilizing. I happen to have 130 bags of topsoil with manure left over from my last job that can make your lawn look new again. I kind of hemmed and hawed as I was in the middle of a baseball game with my boys and did not know these guys from Adam, yet...Continue reading

About 17 years and 8 months ago, something happened that changed my life. The exact date was January 26, 2003 which happened to be Superbowl Sunday. No, it was not the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeating the Oakland Raiders 48-21 in Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego....Continue reading

Two years ago, my 15-year-old son came home from the hospital after being hit by a van. He went from the emergency room to the surgical center to the recovery room and three days later he was released. The surgery was a success in connecting the broken bones in his leg but the road to full recovery was long and painful....Continue reading

When we moved into our house 17 years ago, one of the first things I set out to do was plant fruit trees throughout the property. Having fruit trees surround the house serves many purposes, but the main goal I had in mind was the future joy of watching my kids pick fresh, organic fruit off the trees to enjoy. It was one of the best investments I have made....Continue reading

Recently we celebrated my daughter’s 13th birthday. She was in the mood for some good 'comfort food' so my wife made an amazing organic, spaghetti and meatballs dinner with garlic bread followed by a melt-in-your mouth tiramisu cake that literally took 3 days to prepare. It was one of the best meals of the year and you would never guess it was all gluten-free....Continue reading

A VALUABLE LESSON LEARNED BY MY DAUGHTER... Recently, the Taylor family has embarked on the journey of a few home improvement projects, namely trimming a giant Elm tree in the front yard and painting the exterior of the house. It took over a month to just prep the house (pressure washing, scraping, re-stuccoing, taping, sealing)....Continue reading

The other day, I bought a two-man kayak so I can go ocean fishing with my 15-year-old son. The day I purchased it I was able to get off work a little earlier than usual to give it a try. I have never been kayaking before, especially in the ocean, so I had a few hesitations since I was going to be doing something for the first time. Along with logistics like transporting the kayak and successfully balancing in the kayak, my biggest concern was being dinner for a great white sh...ark. One experienced ocean kayak fisherman I know, told me he has had two encounters with a great white. One was an 8-foot juvenile, but the other was a 15-footer who intentionally bumped his kayak to test if he would be a good meal or not. Since my biological father died at sea while fishing on his surfboard in Hawaii (most likely from a Tiger shark attack), I have had my concerns about man-eating sharks. Once we launched into the harbor of Redondo Beach and settled in, all irrational fear subsided. The gentle breeze, the lapping of the water against the kayak, and beautiful sunset had a way of putting me in a relaxed state. Not to mention the fun my son and I had trying to figure out how to operate the kayak, being surprised by seals popping up in front of us every 5 minutes, and trying to land the two fish we hooked. After our trip I was reminded of how fortunate we are to live near the ocean. ‘Blue Space’ living near a body of water such as the ocean has tremendous benefits to your health. Studies have shown that coastal living is linked to better mental health and well-being. Spending time in or near the ocean puts you in a better mood. A recent study in Neuroscience News & Research showed there was a 20% reduction in poor mental health for those living near the coast compared to those who lived further away. Another study demonstrated that living near water reduced the risk of premature death by 12%-17%. Whether you live near the ocean, lake, or some other type of wetland environment, your health will benefit if you spend time in the ‘blue space,’ as stress and negative feelings dissipate near the water. Carve a little time out this week from your busy schedule and get out in the ‘blue space.’ Have a ‘Blue-tiful’ Thursday! The other day, our 20-year-old son moved out of the house to join his two older brothers who live at my parents' home. They remodeled her backroom this summer to make it happen (see picture above). It is only 7 miles down the road and we all still have dinner together a couple times a week, but the sadness around the dinner table the night he moved out was almost unbearable. Everyone was in tears as we talked about how much we missed Caden being in the house....Continue reading

HIDDEN VIDEO CAMERA TELLS ALL! A few weeks ago, our neighbor, who happens to be a patient, had our kids over for a 4th of July celebration to teach them a few songs, make some crafts and perform in a little 'backyard parade'. My two-year-old daughter has not stopped singing, 'God Bless America.' since that day.... She sings it all the time and we can't get her to stop unless we start to video her on camera. The other day, I got a secret video of her on camera singing her new favorite song but when she saw me filming, she stopped singing and hid. Watch Kayla singing on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/442420859?ref=em-share (Beware - She's hiding behind the couch in her birthday suit as we are still perfecting the potty-training thing) If you just watch the last three seconds of the video, you will think my daughter is the shyest toddler on earth, but if you catch her with her hair down, it's another story. Sometimes, your body can act like my daughter when she is on camera. It can be performing a certain way all the time but when you try to get a snapshot of how it is doing, it acts differently. For example, blood pressure is a good example. BP is always ideal, but when you get it checked at the doctor’s office, you get 'whitecoat syndrome', your BP is high, and you're diagnosed with hypertension. Another example would be a lab test that is not accurate. Often, patients have low thyroid, but when they take a blood test, your TSH happens to be right where it should be at that moment and then you're told your thyroid is perfectly normal when it's not. So, what's the application? Don't just quickly believe everything you're told based on a test, a diagnosis, a so called 'leading expert', a news report, what's being propagated on mainstream media or the internet. You must take the time to investigate, dig a little deeper, and THINK logically looking at the whole big picture. Often, I will encourage my patients to get another opinion, hear what the other practitioner has to say and do what makes sense to them. I love when my patients’ question what I am doing because it lets me know they are THINKING and in the process of investigating & figuring things out for themselves. The more you embrace this approach, the greater health you will experience. Have a Terrific Tuesday! Dr. Derek 'God Bless America' Taylor www. drderektaylor. com 310-891-0102

Yesterday, my family and I got up at 4:00am to head out on a road trip to Arizona. We stopped by the beautiful town of Prescott and spent some time at a nearby lake. While we were there, we ran into a woman who recently relocated from Long Beach, CA.... She was walking her dog around the lake and said it was her favorite thing to do because the lake is so serene and peaceful. However, she went on to say that she never walks her dog around the lake at night. When we asked why, she mentioned that there are some critters around the lake that don't take a liking to dogs. The name of the creature is a Javellna. It looks like a mid-sized wild boar/razorback with sharp tusks that chatter at you if it feels threatened. They have been known to attack dogs because they smell like coyotes, which is a natural predator and they can't tell the difference between the two. This is how an automimmune condition works in the body. Patients with autoimmune conditions are eating foods that their body thinks is a foreign enemy so it ends up attacking itself in the process, causing major health conditions like diabetes, alzheimers, hashimoto's thyroiditis, pain, weight gain and a host of other symptoms. These patients are eating foods they think are good for them, but in reality are causing them problems. Sounds like what is happening in the world right now. Things going on that look good or ok but are very bad. It's important for you to know what's good for you and what's bad. One way of doing this is through muscle response food testing which we do at our office. If you're a patient, bring in a food item you eat regularly that you might be suspicious about, and we will test it at your next visit...no additional charge. In the meantime, pay attention to how you feel after eating certain foods. If you feel bloated, tired, have more pain or don't quite feel right, stop eating that food and see how you feel. Start playing a more active role in your health and reap the benefits both NOW & in the FUTURE. Have a WONDERFUL Wednesday! Derek Taylor, DC www.drderektaylor.com 310-891-0102

SURPRISED AT THE BEACH LAST NIGHT Last night after work, I took my two youngest sons surf fishing at Redondo Beach. The last couple times we went, we struck out every time, but the water temperatures have picked up, so we decided to give it another go.... My two youngest sons, Titus & Jordan, LOVE to fish but they have never caught anything while surf fishing. I think they weren't expecting it but they both latched onto a fish at the same time. You should have seen the look of excitement and intensity on their faces and squealing noises they made as they were reeling them in. Their enthusiasm caught the attention of a group of young people about 30 yards away, and it's almost as if they knew it was their first fish as they did a surprising thing once the fish were landed...they started clapping and cheering (you can see them in the background in the picture above). There's a lot of discouraging things going on in the world right now and it's important to keep up with all that is happening; however, it can be discouraging to take it all in. Sometimes, we can alleviate the stress of others by helping to lift their mood and change their focus and perspective with a simple encouraging gesture. An 'atta boy,’ small gift or token of appreciation, pat on the back, quick text/e-mail, or even a handwritten note you can pop in the mail can be the best medicine that person takes all day. The amazing thing about encouraging others around you is that you're encouraged even more as it is better to give than to receive. After our fishing trip, I took the kids to one of our favorite local Mexican restaurants and both boys thanked me about three or four times for taking them fishing and eating dinner out. I took them on this trip so they would benefit from the experience, but I was the one who benefited the most. What simple act, word, or gesture can you do today to brighten the life of someone else? Sleeping with the ENEMY Almost two months ago, a patient asked if my son and I would come over and remediate her house. After having difficulty sleeping, she was suspicious her problem was coming from EMF’s.... When we arrived at her house, we discovered that power lines were connected to the roof pole right above her bedroom. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, her suspicions were correct. A recent study in the Journal of Public Science demonstrated that daily occupational EMF exposure affects the quality of your sleep. Do you think sleeping underneath EMF exposure from electrical lines all night will affect both the quality and quantity of your sleep? Of course, it will! Although sleep experts recommend adults from age 18-65 get a consistent 7-9 hours of sleep/night, the average American only sleeps 5 hours/night. What happens when you don’t sleep well? Besides being more irritable, exhausted, and moodylack of sleep can affect hormone levels including melatonin which protects you against cancer weight gain as fat burning hormones turn off and fat making hormones turn on increase your risk for heart disease contribute to diabetes and insulin resistance cause premature aging as it affects growth hormone released by your pituitary gland And the list goes on and on. Recently, she asked me to come back because she got a Pelaton bike and wanted it remediated. While I was there, she told me what has happened since we remediated her house. She wanted to fix the EMF’s in her home in hopes that her sleep would improve, but the other benefits she received were even more incredible. Watch the video to hear what happened after the remediation. Have a Terrific Thursday!
