AUCD is taking time during #BlackHistoryMonth to celebrate people who are not only Black activists but Black activists with disabilities. Amanda Gorman made his...tory as the youngest poet to perform at an inauguration. We celebrate all she has and will do! #BlackDisabledHistoryMonth The complete quote reads: "I don't look at my disability as a weakness, it's made me the performer that I am and the storyteller that I strive to be. When you have to teach yourself how to say sounds, when you have to be highly concerned about pronunciation, it gives you a certain awareness of sonics, if the auditory experience." Visual Description: Image of a Black woman with hair in braids that are tied up in a bun and she is wearing a white coat. Amanda Gorman, National Youth Poet Laureate. "I don't look at my disability as a weakness, it's made me the performer that I am and the storyteller that I strive to be." National Disability Employment Awareness Month Spotlight: College to Career Program, West Los Angeles College The UCLA Tarjan Center provides training and technical assistance to eight College to Career (C2C) programs throughout the state. The programs are funded by the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) and provide inclusive higher education, job preparation, and employment placement services to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).... In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, three students from the C2C program at West Los Angeles College are serving as essential staff of an Outback Steakhouse at the Del Amo Mall in Torrance, California. In 2019, DOR reported that 77 students attained employment and retained their jobs for more than 90 days. Students were employed in a wide range of positions including clerical and administrative support, food service workers, amusement and recreational attendants, child-care workers, customer service representatives, and stock clerks. Katy, Salvador, and James - featured in the photo above - were three of 25 staff who worked at the Torrance Outback Steakhouse. Katy and James work as hostess and busser, and James and Salvador provide customer service. Angel Key (shown below) is the West LA College C2C program’s job developer. Her role includes assisting students with identifying their career interests, development of resumes, and interview preparation. Angel obtains professional development and support from the UCLA Tarjan Center. The UCLA Tarjan Center provides training and the facilitation of peer sharing on job development strategies amongst C2C coordinators and job developers to promote the employment of students with intellectual disabilities. For the latest #SeeHerStory, broadcast journalist Katie Couric profiled disability rights activist Judy Heumann. Judy lost the use of her legs after a childhood... bout with polio and became an activist on her very first day of school. The principal denied me entrance into the school because I couldn’t walk and he said I could be a fire hazard, she told Daily Show host Trevor Noah. As an adult, she sued the NYC board of education after she was denied a teaching license and she won, becoming the first wheelchair user to teach in NYC. See more
