Talk This Way Therapy

The more you narrate your day, the more vocabulary words your child will be exposed to. Just speaking for an hour will expose them to 1000-2000 words! Imagine if you talked the whole day.

Each week, #TalkThisWay will be providing receptive or expressive language milestones. This week we will be targeting Age 6 Expressive Language. By Age 7, your child should: 7Uses most parts of speech, grammar is mostly acquired & is mastering exceptions to grammatical rules... 7Expresses ideas with a variety of complex sentences 7Asks and answers factual and inferential questions 7Uses a variety of words 7Gives directions 7Names some letters and numbers 7Sentence length is about 6 words 7Uses passive voice appropriately

Developmental norms vary amongst different age groups. At each age, a child should be able to produce different sounds

It is important that we match the child’s level when speaking. If your child isn’t using words, you should be using one-word phrases. This will make it more likely for your child to try new words and repeat after you. If they are using one-word phrases, it’s good to match their level and/or add an extra word to expand on their utterance.
