In lieu of jog-a-thon this Fall, we are doing a Virtual Move-a-Thon to keep our students active and to stay physically and mentally healthy! We know this year has been hard on everyone, to say the least, and advocating for our children is even more important than ever. We want to make sure our Tahoe families are staying strong while spending more time at home and on the computer. Family members, friends and neighbors are encouraged to join in the fun! With this event and ot...her fundraisers, we can pay for student headphones as well as improvements necessary for a return to campus. Any amount you can pledge will help to enrich our children's education! With Election Day finally behind us next Wednesday, November 4th, it will certainly be a great day to visit Sac City Brews!! Anytime between 3 and 10pm you should either hang out on their large patio (it'll be a beautiful sunny day) or pick up food to enjoy at home. They of course have beer to go too. In addition to treating yourself to a great meal and fresh brews, this will also be a fundraising event for Tahoe Elementary! Make sure to tell your cashier you are with the sc...hool and 15% of your purchases will go toward resources for our students to use during distance learning as well as once they return to campus. So grab a meal and drinks before the meeting, after the meeting, or even during the meeting (with headphones or earbuds of course)! Frank Day's father was one of the last traditional leaders of the Bald Rock Konkow Maidu. It was from his father and other elders, that Frank learned the langua...ge, legends, and songs of the Maidu. After the death of his father and a decade of travel, Frank returned to California, where he worked as an agricultural laborer, among other occupations. After a serious injury in 1960, he turned to painting as a form of therapy. Day became a key figure in the California Indian art movement that gained momentum in the late 1960s, creating more than 200 oil paintings related to the Maidu’s cultural legacy. He was also a major inspiration for the Maidu traditional dance group at Pacific Western Traders in Folsom in 1973 a group that influenced artists like Frank LePena and Harry Fonseca. This painting shows natural recycling: The fallen log provides a rich source of nutrients for mushrooms, which in turn provide nourishment for the man who gathers them. Ants crawl on the pile of sawdust in the lower left corner, demonstrating that the fallen log is also important to the life cycle. Frank Day (Konkow Maidu, 19021976), Cycle of Life, ca. 1965.
