The health of our body is tied to the health of our mind in so many different ways. As we move into the New Year, it's important to take a moment and thank yourself for your achievements, even if what you achieved was simply getting through 2020. Wellness is a whole-body state, so taking the time to nurture the mind, body, and soul are all vital components. Try some of these small acts of self-love to thank your body, mind, and soul for showing up this past year: Indul...ge in a meaningful music break. Music is an amazing emotional conductor and can help you process and get in touch with whatever you’re feeling. Practice mirror work. Pause in front of the bathroom mirror and smile at yourself, playfully wink at yourself, or tell yourself, I love you. Re-read or revisit a recent compliment. It’s natural that the negative feedback sticks out, so make a point of savoring the compliments and the good moments, where they might otherwise pass by in a rush. Eat a snack, drink some water. Taking good care of your physical body, after all, is one of the most loving things you can do for yourself. Connect with nature. Whether it’s watching snow fall outside your office window or standing beneath a tree in your backyardis incredibly restorative to the human spirit. Stretch your body. Hold your pose of choice for a few minutes; try gently focusing on areas of your body that don't usually get stretchy movement, like your hips. Take a step toward forgiving yourself for something you regret. Forgiveness is a process and doesn’t happen all at once. Think of what you’re upset with yourself about and start with a mantra or manifest emotions that work towards coming to terms with yourself. Try one or all of the above, and then call our office so you can get started on giving your health the attention it deserves. By making yourself a priority, you can then start to pour focus into other areas of your life without worrying about it negatively affecting your wellness. We are here and happy to help!

Here are 5 benefits to including strength training in your fitness repertoire: - Boost your metabolic rate. Optimizing your metabolic rate helps you efficiently use calories to maintain muscle mass, and it helps you lose weight more quickly. - Reduce the risk of injury. Building muscle also happens to strengthen ligaments, bones, and tendons. By doing so you can reduce the risk of sustaining injuries. - Strength training is versatile. You don't have to go to the gym to buil...d muscle! Bodyweight exercises, dumbbells, kettleballs, and resistance bands can all easily be used at home to aid strength training. - Enhance your shape. Toning your body is really defining your muscles. - Improve your health. Weight training can have a major impact on overall health. It can improve cardiovascular functions to reduce the risk of certain diseases, and can improve your overall well-being. Of course, no one exercise regimen is right for every person - just like nutrition, your body is unique and has its own needs - and you should listen to how your body feels during and after working out to determine the best fitness routine. Are you suffering from chronic inflammation in the brain? Functional and holistic medicine practitioners are seeing an explosion in disorders related to inflammation and autoimmunity caused by too many dietary or environmental toxins present. Inflammation can affect any part of your body, but it often takes root in the brain; some big triggers of neurological inflammation are gluten and dairy. However, if neurological damage shows up on conventional medical testing, doctors... often cannot make a diagnosis based on those environmental or dietary causes. This is where functional neurology can help! Patients struggling to recover from brain injuries and inflammation are told nothing can be done when, in fact, research shows nutritional therapy and brain rehabilitation strategies can help them recover their brain health. Symptoms that you may have inflammation in your brain include: Brain fog Memory loss Confusion Degenerative brain diseases like Alzheimer's or Dementia People often have an intuitive knowledge when something isn't right with their health. There is a way to manage brain inflammation and resolve the surface symptoms so you can live in optimal health. Ask our office how functional neurology and functional medicine could be the right answer to fight chronic inflammation and restore your brain function!

If you are autoimmune, it is SO important to look at how your body is functioning as a whole! When people are working to manage an autoimmune or chronic condition, they typically focus on an anti-inflammatory diet and protocol, which is great; however, one often overlooked dealbreaker to getting better is anemia. Anemia hinders recovery because it means your cells are not getting enough oxygen, and without oxygen, recovery and repair can’t happen. Signs of anemia inclu...de: - fatigue - weakness - brain fog - depression - lightheadedness - dizziness - irregular heart beat - cold hands and feet - chest pain - headache - pale skin It's important to know what type of anemia you have, as not all anemia is iron-deficient, and you don't want to supplement with iron if you don't need it. Some of the most common types of anemia are: -Iron-deficiency anemia -B-12 anemia -Pernicious anemia -Anemia of inflammation or chronic disease -Hemochromatosis (too much iron) Knowing which type of anemia you are suffering from is imperative to get the proper treatment, so you can focus on managing your autoimmune condition more fully. Contact our office if you have symptoms of anemia or are having trouble managing your autoimmunity!

Here are four fun and healthy ways to boost your mental health this month: 1. Organize and improve your home and workspace. A cluttered environment can lead to undue stress and inefficiency. Dedicate a weekend this afternoon to getting things, so you can focus on relaxing. 2. Take advantage of nature. Connecting with nature is a natural mood booster, and when we breathe in fresh air, we raise oxygen levels in the brain, releasing serotonin and promoting proper brain functio...n. 3. Try something new. Experiment with fun seasonal recipes that utilize healthy fruits and veggies. Squash contains magnesium, an important nutrient that helps with anxiety and stress; apples are high fiber and in phytonutrients, which prevent DNA damage; pumpkin contains minerals that boost brain function; cinnamon helps regulate blood sugar, which can stabilize mood swings. 4. Bring the outdoors in! Scents like lavender, jasmine, or chamomile can soothe your senses and calm your mind, while cinnamon, rose, and orange zest may bring on relaxation and joy. Aromatherapy is often used to reduce stress and anxiety as scents stimulate the receptors in your nose, sending messages to your hypothalamus, the part of your brain that influences your hormonal system. This then impacts your mood, metabolism, and stress levels all key components of mental health. If you're plagued by chronic stress, anxiety, or mental health issues, reach out to our office so we can get you on the path to peace and joy!
