Agree or disagree with the IOC stance on Olympic Host Countries? "Awarding the Olympic Games to a National Olympic Committee does not mean that the IOC agrees with the political structure, social circumstances or human rights standards in its country." A statement from the International Olympic Committee, as questions grow about possible diplomatic boycotts of the 2022 Olympics in Beijing. More world leaders are considering the ethical ramifications of participating now that the US has accused China of carrying out genocide. Beijing has long denied the claim.

There have been some reports from Europe of young athletes who caught the Covid Flu and then seemed to have completely recovered from it who then developed hear...t problems when they resumed strenuous training. Some even died of heart failure (which is apparently different from a heart attack). The Covid virus not only attacks the lungs but also causes subtle to major damage to other internal organs. So fencers who have recovered from the Covid Flu should consider having a cardiogram and should be careful if experiencing any chest discomfort. The Austrian medical association has encountered enough cases to have started a formal study of the potential problem. (How's your German? There's always Google translate.)

A terrific foil expose by one and only Augusto Bizzi Fotografo. Sort of a New Year's gift to the fencing shut-ins.

Happy 100th birthday to Paul Makler Sr., the oldest living American Olympian and oldest living Olympic fencer! Makler represented his country in the épée events... at the 1952 Helsinki Games, where he eliminated in the first round individually and the second one with the team. He won silver medals in team foil and épée at the 1955 Pan-American Games and two of his sons, Todd and Brooke, also fenced at the Olympics. By career, Makler was a doctor, practicing internal medicine, and also worked as an administrator with US Fencing. This article addresses the extreme angle of our sport. It does exist - acknowledgement is welcome. There are quite a few innacuracies and (more importantly) omissions, yet, The Parent described is unfortunately too familiar to coaches, refs, participants, and the list goes on.
