Botflies are a nuisance that affects our equines throughout the year. Their eggs are seen primarily on the legs as groups of little yellow dots. As horses scratch and bite where the botflies have laid their eggs, the eggs are ingested and become larvae in the horse's stomach. Botfly larvae are not considered worms, but keeping your horse dewormed with either ivermectin or moxidectin can prevent them from becoming an internal issue. Here are some great articles on Bot Flies: ...https://thehorse.com/124776/got-bots/ https://www.farnam.com/stable-talk/the-oft-forgotten-bot If you suspect your horse has a Botfly infestation and you have additional questions or concerns, please call our office at (209) 524-9191.

Fall is in full swing. Leaves are falling, weather is becoming cooler, and the mad dash for the perfect present is upon us. Let's make sure we continue to keep an eye on our equine pals, because EPM (Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis) is a higher risk to horses during this time of year. Take a look at this great article written by AAEP (American Association of Equine Practitioners) on EPM. If you have any questions or concerns, please call our office at (209) 524-9191.

Happy Friday! On the final day of National Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week we would like to recognize a few other staff members... This summer, Michelle Laiolo, a current UC Davis veterinary student, worked part time as a Veterinary Technician after her classes moved online. She is an excellent student and assistant, and we know she will be a fantastic veterinarian soon! Brianna Sweet, who usually works in the office, has often stepped up to help when we are in ne...ed of another veterinary assistant. She really can do it all! Jennifer Metcalf and Sheryl Bolin, who also work in the office, are always working to support our doctors and staff in any way they can. Our clinic wouldn't be the same without them! And finally, Everardo Lopez works hard to maintain our beautiful facility and feeds and takes care of all the horses who stay here. Much love to our entire SREC Team! We hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Thursday is for being thankful, and boy are we thankful for our volunteers! We have had a number of students rotate through the clinic this year, and it has been a pleasure teaching them. These volunteer veterinary assistants have been critical to keeping the clinic clean and tidy, making sure our patients are well-loved and cared for , and assisting our doctors with appointments and even overnight emergencies. We have had college students, including Cassidy Pehl, Cameron ...Sauls, and Zaira Arteaga, who are all looking to apply to Veterinary School. Dezmine Washington and Lilliana Cruz are students at Modesto Junior College enrolled in the vet tech program. And Bonnie Smith and Melissa Yowakim completed externships with us through the Carrington College Veterinary Technician Program. We would particularly like to recognize Cassidy Pehl, who has become an integral part of our clinic during her time here. Cassidy is applying for Fall 2021 entrance to veterinary school, so help us wish her luck by leaving a comment below!

We are celebrating Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week and today we would like to recognize Janell Percey. Janell has been with us for a little over two years as a part-time assistant. She helps with everything around the clinic, including the pharmacy, stallion collections, castrations, surgeries, dentals, and emergency appointments. She is a great horse handler and never seems to run out of energy! If you see her today, give her a wave and say, "Hi!"

Our Lead Veterinary Assistant is Carolina Garcia. Carolina started with us through an internship while she was a student in the Carrington College Veterinary Technician program. Once her internship was complete, she stayed on as a volunteer. Then she became our Lead Assistant! She is currently pursuing her Registered Veterinary Technician License. On Saturday Dr. Kim Hauck and Dr. Carol Van Hoogmoed spent the day judging one of the obstacles at the Bauhr Ranch Horsemanship Challenge. The scenario was a down horse on the trail. Participants were evaluated on their ability to safely approach and restrain the "horse" while their partner called for help. It was a fun day and we were proud of all the competitors!

Our October weed is clover, as it thrives during fall and winter. The three main types of clover we see in the Central Valley are red clover, white clover, and alsike clover. While red and white clover are not directly poisonous to horses, a fungus containing the toxin slaframine can grow on them and cause excessive drooling, also known as "clover slobbers." This fungus can be found both in pastures and dried hay. Thankfully, this condition is not life-threatening and can be... resolved by taking horses off of the affected feed. Alsike clover, on the other hand, can cause skin photosensitization and liver disease. In this case, watch your horse for loss of appetite, weight loss, jaundice, and colic. Severe toxicity can even lead to death. While some clover is good because it puts nitrogen back into the soil, too much can potentially cause health issues for your animals. Good pasture management is essential for keeping toxic plants at bay. Here are some great articles on clover, its management, and its effect on horses: https://www.canr.msu.edu//know_what_you_grow_clover_toxici https://thehorse.com/116485/clover-control/ https://thehorse.com/18490/the-grass-guide-red-clover/ https://thehorse.com/17785/the-grass-guide-white-clover/a
