Know My Name: Australian Women Artists from 1900 to Now opens at National Gallery of Australia, Canberra in just over a week!! If you've been following along wi...th our journey over the past few weeks of the creation of our large scale installation, Kungkarangkalpa (Seven Sisters), you'll be starting to get a sense of just how much work has gone into the piece and the immensity of the project. With the figures of the Seven Sisters and Wati Nyiru finished over two weeks of workshops in March this year the next phase was the completion of the skyscape. Here's Dianne Ungukalpi Golding working on her section of the skyscape, using hand dyed raffia to intricately detail the panel. A huge thank you to #IanPotterFoundation Australia Council for the Arts and #IVAIS for providing key funding for us in this project and everything we do! See more

This is Jenny, Cat’s daughter, writing to tell all of you that my mom’s beautiful playful soul exited her body this morning as she experienced a gentle death sh...e felt ready for and at peace about. There are so many things I could say about my mom, but I will simplify for now and say she was amazing. She raised me by herself and I know the strength, ambition, and creativity that shines boldy in me grew from her light. I was able to work remotely and live with her these last two months. My son, Charlie, her favorite human, with us of course. She’s always been more of a second parent to him than a grandma. Both from her youthful spirit and that she’s always been the one I can give him to and feel complete peace of mind while we are apart. He’s always called her Mimi. There aren’t words for what losing her feels like See more

Enni Id was born in 1904 to a tenant farmer family and had numerous step-sisters and step-brothers. When she was young, she ran away to learn animal husbandry, ...then went on to work in her aunt’s dressmaker’s shop in Helsinki. She married twice but had no children, her husbands died. At last the widow had the freedom to paint day and, particularly, night on hardboard ordered from the local co-op. Her brush also worked over the entire house, doors, floors, furniture, jars and baskets included. She would sit in the decorated rocking chair and, holding the board on her lap, paint pictures of various harvest chores as well as illustrations of the local legends. Enni became a local legend, although even many of those closest to her thought she was odd. She changed her image with the cunning of a proper countrywoman, depending on who she was with. She only became known to wider audiences at the age of 70 when her work was chosen to be displayed in an exhibition of naïve art at the Kunsthalle Helsinki in 1973. Enni Id’s paintings were exhibited well into the 1980s. She spent her last years until her death in1992 in a old-age home and remained active and cheerful, and she continued painting even in those circumstances. She bequeathed her ornate house to the local council; the house is now open to the public during the summer months. My repost.

The Yet belt is part of the elaborate ceremonial costume worn by the king and both male and female members of the Kuba royal family. The number of objects suspe...nded from the belt depends on the rank of the individual. Two types of pendants are used; rare shells traded inland from the Indian and Atlantic coasts, and miniature representations of over twelve types of objects and designs associated with the royal family. This belt has twenty-three objects; five shells, three hats, a ram’s head and a double gong, all heavily decorated with glass beads and cowrie shells....
