Susurrus Literary Journal 04.11.2020

Happy New Year, all! The Staff of Susurrus was hard at work all last semester discussing and selecting written pieces for our 25th anniversary edition. We still have a few left to discuss, so we have not yet sent out final acceptance notifications. We anticipate that these will go out shortly -- by the first week in February at the latest -- so if you have submitted poetry, fiction, and/or creative non-fiction, check your e-mail between February 1 and February 5! In the mea...ntime, we are still accepting photography and other visual art submissions (drawings, paintings, sculpture, digital art, comics, etc.) These should be submitted no later than Friday, February 28 at 5:00 p.m. Submissions should be in jpeg format, highest possible resolution, and e-mailed to the Susurrus Staff at: [email protected]. (Note: Acceptance notifications for photography and art pieces will go out in mid-March at the latest). We look forward to hearing from you!

Please submit, by no later than Monday, February 10 before midnight, your pieces (highest resolution possible, please). All drawings, paintings, etc. should be photographed and submitted in highest resolution possible -- we may, if necessary, ask to re-photograph these if they are accepted). Susurrus Literary Journal 15.07.2020

Hi Everyone, I am sorry for not posting this sooner; some of you may recall that this year, due to low enrollment in ENGCW 450/451, which led to the cancellation of those classes, we did NOT publish an edition of Susurrus. It was tough to go a year without our beloved literary journal, and we definitely don't want to see it go away! Ever hopeful, I'm trying once again to offer ENGCW this fall, and I hope you'll sign up (or, if you can't or have already taken the course, that ...you'll encourage friends and classmates to sign up!) It's a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the process of producing a top-quality college literary publication; and, as a staff member, you have a chance to submit your own literary and artistic pieces for consideration. I've included a flier here as well, but here are the details, again, just in case: What: ENGCW 450: College Literary Magazine When: Fall 2019; Mondays/Wednesdays 1:30-2:50 Where: Sacramento City College, Student Services 214 How: Sign up online through SCC's website; use course code 19805 For more information, contact Professor Marci Selva at: [email protected].

WE STILL NEED YOU! I was just informed that if our enrollment in the Susurrus course doesn't increase significantly by the start of the semester, the course will be cancelled. Please spread the word and share the previous post with course information. Interested folks can send me a Facebook message if you have questions or need further information. Thank you!

Susurrus Literary Journal 18.06.2020

IMPORTANT: SUSURRUS NEEDS YOU! Susurrus Literary Journal is in need of staff! Currently, the enrollment for our Susurrus class, ENGCW 450 is low, and the class is in danger of being cancelled again. :( We need students to enroll in ENGCW 450 ASAP! If you have NOT yet taken the course (the college doesn't allow repeats of courses students have passed, unfortunately) OR you know of anyone who might be interested in taking the course, please enroll and/or encourage your fri...ends to. Here is the course information: What: ENGCW 450 (College Literary Magazine) Course Code: 20393 Course Days/Times: Thursdays, 6:00-9:05 p.m. Course Location: Student Services 215 Course Description: This course provides instruction in techniques and experience in editing and structuring the college literary magazine, Susurrus. Students will select and edit manuscripts in the genres of poetry, short fiction, and creative non-fiction. **Advisor's addition to the course description: This is a really fun class! It is your opportunity to help select the pieces -- both literary and visual (we accept submissions of original photos and other visual artwork as well!) -- that will comprise our beautiful, highly-readable publication. And, if that's not enough to convince you, a bonus: This course has no tests/exams and no essays to write! The only "homework" is reading the submitted pieces, submitting (very) brief written critiques, and participating actively in discussion and selection of submissions. Bonus #2: You are also able -- and encouraged to -- submit your own work for consideration. Super-extra-special bonus #3: It looks great on university transfer and other applications. :) If you have any questions, please feel free to message me here. I hope to see you in Spring 2019! Susurrus Literary Journal 09.06.2020

Hello all Susurrus fans, former staff, past contributors, and potential future contributors! You've probably noticed that there haven't been any updates to this page in awhile. This is due to news that is both bad AND good. First, the bad, which is not so bad: Due to extremely low enrollment, the Susurrus class, ENGCW 450, was cancelled this fall. This left the English Department with a conundrum: To skip Susurrus altogether this year OR to come up with an alternative. ... We all agreed that NOT having a book this year wasn't what we wanted, so...we came up with an alternative. Now, the good news: The ENGCW 450 course will now be offered in the spring of 2019, which means that the book will come out next fall as opposed to our usual spring release. While this seems far away (and it is), this offers us some advantages: 1) We can start accepting submissions at the end of this semester, in the hope that we will already have a lot of good ones in time for the start of spring; 2) It gives us time to recruit students for the class next semester, thus avoiding the low-enrollment issue. So...Here's what you need to do: 1) Tell your friends to sign up for ENGCW 450 next semester (and, if you haven't taken it already, tell yourself to sign up too!) It will meet just once a week -- Thursdays from 6:00 to 9:05 p.m. It is always a fun class with tons of good discussion of some fantastic student work. It is not a traditional academic class in that there are no tests or essays -- just critiques of student work and submissions of your own work if you choose to do so. Most of the work in the class is reading, which all of us creative writing folks love to do! 2) Start getting your written and/or art pieces ready to submit; dust off those poems, short stories, pieces of creative non-fiction AND your photos and other art pieces. Shortly, we'll announce a deadline for early submissions with all of the pertinent info, so keep an eye on this space! More information is forthcoming, so please check back for updates. We look forward to seeing your submissions and, I hope, seeing some of you in class next semester! --Marci Selva, 2019 Susurrus Advisor
