I remember buying the original at one of John Severson's movies and going to the drugstore in Hermosa Beach to buy it when it began quarterly publication. Suddenly, I feel old. Today marks the 95th Anniversary of "The Great Rescue of 1925". On this day Duke Kahanamoku, Gerry Vultee, Owen Hale and Bill Herwig rescued 12 fishermen from drowning when the Thelma foundered in the surf while trying to get out of the Newport Harbor. Duke rescued 7 of the men on his own. Let us never forget the heroic actions of our surfing ancestors.
