A few days ago, my family and I received some heart-breaking news: my sister Anh Le's liver is not big enough to donate to me and support the both of us. I deb...ated writing this post because I thought it’d be asking people way too much if they or anyone they know may be willing to donate part of their liver, but so many people reached out on Instagram asking how they can help, and spreading this message is the one thing that will make the greatest impact. I've made this post public so it should be easy to share. My parents are too old to donate and my other sister is too young. I don’t have a huge social network in Houston, so I would appreciate anyone spreading the word here. For those of you who don't know, I have biliary atresia and was born without bile ducts. The cause unknown by anyone, but I've heard over the years that it appears more in Asians, women, and first-borns, and I’m all three (but that doesn't make me any less grateful of my three identities). There is no cure for biliary atresia and it almost always requires a liver transplant at some point in life. The first step in treatment is the Kasai surgery, which I had done when I was a baby. However, that is just a bandaid solution; most people will need a liver transplant by the time they’re 10, so all things considered, I’m super lucky. I am on the waiting list for a deceased donor, which is great, but... Ok, I hate thinking about these stats, but in this case, I just wanted to call them out to shed light on the current situation in the U.S. According to UNOS, every 9 minutes another name is added to the national organ transplant waiting list. And in 2018, on average, 17 patients died every day waiting for a transplant. Of the 60% of people in the country who are signed up as organ donors, only 3 in 1,000 people die in a way that allows for organ donation. Because the liver can regrow, a living-liver donation is possible, and it increases my long-term odds of survival versus waiting for a deceased organ to become available (in my size, with my blood type, in my geographical region, liver-disease free). For anyone wanting more information, check out the link below or message me. I've been looking into this option for 8 years, so I've got plenty of answers. And for those who are wondering, my health insurance will cover everything from testing to the transplant to the recovery, to medication, and if there are complications after the transplant, they’ll cover that too! So don’t worry about getting in a financial burden over me. https://www.americantransplantfoundation.org//about-livin/
