More apples and faster. Walmart Inc. is building a high-speed grocery warehouse to solidify its position as the nation’s biggest grocer. The new distribution center in Shafter, California -- halfway between Los Angeles and Fresno -- is set to open in the fall of 2020 and will move products in and out 40 percent faster than the company’s existing warehouses, Walmart said in a blog post Thursday. The building will be equipped with automation technology from... Witron, a German supplier of logistics services. The new center is Walmart’s latest investment to grow its grocery business, which accounts for more than half of U.S. sales and is a bulwark against Amazon.com Inc.’s encroachment. The retailer has improved the presentation and quality of its fresh food, and is expanding curbside pickup and home-delivery options. But getting strawberries and cantaloupes from fields to stores is still a complex, expensive process, and any time saved along the journey translates into increased sales and profits. See more

If you've ever launched a product then you've probably heard the term "3PL" thrown around. But what does it mean? 3PL stands for "third party logistics" which includes any partner that helps store, pack and fulfill customer orders. Warehousing is a huge part of brand growth, and choosing the right one to ensure a high quality, speedy packing and shipping experience to your customer is the way to go. #supplysavvy #3PL

Retailers have now come to realize that e-commerce is the most dependable anchor to hold on to and is the future of the industry. Among the other trends that have popped up in retail since the outbreak of COVID-19 is the growing shift towards direct-to-consumer sales by retail businesses, consumer goods companies, fashion brands, and even farmers across the country. In a direct-to-consumer model, manufacturers or retailers sell directly to the consumer wi...thout the involvement of middlemen such as third-party sellers, wholesalers, and retail outlets for distribution. Typically, this is done by setting up an online storefront, or even a social media page, from where customers can browse and place orders. The company then directly ships products to consumer locations with the help of an in-house transport facility or third-party transporters. #dtc #supplysavvy #supplychain See more

These are the Cu sisters. Chrystle, the dentist, is an extreme, pro-flosser. Cat, the artist, is a little lazier on the flossing frontier. They started @Cocofloss to make flossing an essential yet often neglected daily routine more fun, motivating, and rewarding for everyone. Flossing is always associated with dread, neglect, or guilt, says Chrystle Cu, a dentist and cofounder of Cocofloss. I really wanted people to think about flossing differently.... And she has. Cu and her sister Catherine Cu have put a new spin on an oral hygiene stapleone that shuns the standard Gore-Tex fiber found in most floss brands for a flavorful sponge-like texture composed of hundreds of expanding microfiber filaments. Fans say the design makes for a more efficient and satisfying experience that, the cofounders hope, can do what some may think is the impossible: make flossing enjoyable. #founderfriday #supplysavvy See more

Our 3 favorite letters in the Supply Chain Dictionary #supplychainterm #supplysavvy SKU (pronounced skew), short for stock keeping unit, is used by retailers to identify and track its inventory, or stock. A SKU is a unique code consisting of letters and numbers that identify characteristics about each product, such as manufacturer, brand, style, color, and size. Companies issue their own unique SKU codes specific to the good and ser...vices it sells. Two companies selling the same item, such as yoga pants, would likely issue two different internal SKUS. The purpose of SKUs is to help companies more accurately and quickly account for every piece of their inventory. They are different from model numbers, but model numbers can be incorporated into a SKU if a company so chooses. See more

We were happy to read the steps @fedex is taking to benefit their small/medium business customers! #shipping #supplysavvy #smallbusiness "We are working diligently to protect our small and medium customers from the impact of most peak surcharges to ensure that their nascent recovery continues to grow post-[COVID-19]," Chief Marketing and Communications Officer Brie Carere said. Large shippers willing to ship on lower-volume days of the week or move their holiday volume earlier in the calendar may also see a pricing benefit in negotiations. "We have actively had conversations with our top-25 and now moving to our top-100 customers," Carere said. "We are rewarding customers that can pull volume forward."

Supply Chain Term of the Week: FIFO (First In, First Out) #themoreyouknow #supplysavvy In inventory control, first in, first out [FIFO] means that stock is issued and charged out on the basis of the age of the inventory; the oldest stock is sold first. From an inventory control point of view this reduces the likelihood of stock write-offs, of obsolete or age-expired stock. From a costing point of view it reflects the actual price paid for the inventory. If stock is replenished at a different price, there is then a dilemma about pricing stock that has been bought at different prices.
