The easiest and cheapest way to add style to your home is with paint color. Unfortunately, most Americans are color-phobic, and when they attempt color, they often fail. But with a little guidance, you can add beauty and value to your home. Photo 1, does it right. Starting with a good palette of 3 tones of taupe - dark paint, lighter stained paneling, and paler accent fence. It's a simple formula = pick one solid CALM color (err on lighter than dark), then choose a lighter a...nd darker tone of the same family. Second, find an architectural line and accent that in Dark. Here the roof facia line is painted black. Finally, choose a playful bright color accent, here the Sunflower yellow door. This is a tasteful and classy scheme that is modern, but also fits in the MidCentury Modern family. Photos 2 and 3, are from a style Makeover I did for clients in Palm Springs. This Alexander has terrific lines, but the paint was killing it. Grey paint, dull enough even to hide the beautiful Stonework beside the front door. I chose a classic MidC bluejean blue base color which specifically made the brown stonework Pop. Then clean white and touches of black trim and fencing accents complete the basic scheme and accent the beautiful asymmetry of the home. Did you catch the error? The door should be Yellow to complement the scheme. But the client insisted on Aqua at the last minute. Sigh. General Tip: Mid Century style celebrates the relationship between architectural lines and playful color AND the Location. The PS desert is all about amazing light, azure skies, and craggy brown mountains. Somber darks and battleship greys have no place here as the base color for your home. Especially MIdC homes. See more
