Yesterday was an historic day: we finally mounted our gear on the Internet Archive's tower in Richmond! (...only took five years to get here...) #FreeWiFi for all!
People's Open Network is expanding to Richmond and beyond! In other news, we're stoked to report we've received a generous pile of money from Handshake Foundation and a grant from Internet Society, hosted our first unconference, are supporting a new mesh initiative in Santa Cruz, and have gotten some quality media attention this past month. - https://mailchi.mp//peoplesopen-march-2018-big-plans-on-th
Sudo Mesh volunteers are hopeful that with new resources and the right work, they can blanket all of Oakland in a functioning, community-owned mesh networkmeaning a free and open webwithin 5 years. Mickey Capper reports.
So rad to videochat with our comrades at @OlyMesh tonight! Sharing stories, visions, and bootstrapping all of us to #MeshThePlanet! <3
The version 3 protoypes arrived! Fitz gives a video update on the new hardware: disaster.radio/updates/ http://pbs.twimg.com/media/DbreZoJV4AAGX64.jpg
way humbled to be on this list of incredible organizations receiving funding awards from the People's Life Fund, money redirected by war tax resisters toward people-powered infrastructure and support
So, I got kicked out of #nabshow today for quietly holding a 'SAVE NET NEUTRALITY' banner up with a comrade during Ajit Pai's bullshit keynote speech. Classic suppression of free speech by those in bed with corporate shills! #netneutrality #peoplesopennetwork #NABBEDatNAB
Big plans on the horizon! The People's Open Network has been picking up steam! After another successful workshop, we received some funding, started holding regular office hours, and, of course, are back out on rooftops mounting new People's Open Nodes.
In late February of 2018, after approximately a year of back-and-forth messaging with an awesome activist employee at SF startup Credit Karma, Sudo Room finally... secured a donation of 85 nice laptops! Unfortunately, none of them have hard drives nor power supplies. Your donation goes directly to the costs of buying them to realize the goal of getting nice laptops into the hands of those who need them! A well-functioning laptop can make a world of difference in anyone's life, and we've committed to getting them into the hands of SF Bay Area-based youth, activists, and video producers who would otherwise be unable to afford one. At the time of this writing, approximately 60 of those 85 laptops have been allocated to the following: * 3 production-quality PCs and 3 production-quality MacBook Pros to OWH Studios, INC. for their classes teaching video production and editing to disadvantaged youth in Oakland; * 4 production-quality MacBook Pros to black high school girls learning video production to channel their activism from Eimeon Hakim Serfaty; * 4 PCs for livestreaming events and running A/V at the Omni Commons in Oakland, enabling members of Omni's resident film collective Liberated Lens to do mobile video editing, and running the laser cutter in Omni's resident hackerspace Sudo Room; * Over 80% of recipients are activists, many on the front lines in the struggle against police brutality. Most (75%) are POC and/or immigrants, half are youth and/or students, half are artists and/or media producers, and a third are educators. Our goal is humble: $5,000 will be needed to purchase the following: * $3,500 for 128GB SSD Hard Drives * $1,300 for power supplies * $200 to replace dead batteries Every little bit counts - just $5 will cover the cost of a power supply for one Lenovo PC! Thanks for your support and solidarity! >>> CLICK HERE TO DONATE! <<< https://www.facebook.com/donate/198111750959829/198668257570845/
Awesome turnout for today's #BuildYourOwnInternet workshop by Peoples Open Network, starting off with a panel discussion with experts on digital rights and community wireless networks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaFFFw0hndQ&app=desktop
Last weekend we put up a new node in the Berkeley Hills. The node has line-of-sight to the Archive.org data center in Richmond as well as line-of-site to all of... North Berkeley and Albany (from the Berkeley Rose Garden down to Golden Gate Fields). This node mount also wins the prize for best sunset! https://peoplesopen.net/blog/new-node-in-the-berkeley-hills/
We did an interview with Fast Company last week on #meshnetworks and #communityinternet as one solution for combating the repeal of #netneutrality - check it out! - http://ow.ly/ir9M30hpycL
