It’s no secret that the last year has seen a dramatic increase in how often we use the phrase unprecedented times. One element of that is the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and the steps we all may need to take during the pandemic to protect our own health as well as that of our families, friends, neighbors, and communities. Some of us may need to self-isolate or quarantine following travel, a potential COVID exposure, or other circumstances. Join Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) in our community mission to be #UCSFFluFighters! To support the #health and #well-being of UC students, faculty and staff and our communities, the University of California, in consultation with UC Health leadership, has issued a systemwide executive order requiring all members of the UC community to receive an #influenza immunization before Nov. 1, 2020. SHCS has launched our #flu vaccine campaign, UCSF Flu Fighters, in s...upport of these efforts and to help all #learners complete this mandate. UCSF has also implemented a flu shot campaign that started September 1 to help meet UCOP’s #vaccination deadline of November 1. This will include 140 flu clinics across #UCSF, as well as 170 flu deputies within our #health system to provide #free vaccines to their colleagues. In addition, UCSF Health and a number of #community partners will be providing flu vaccines. Students can #participate in the campaign in the following ways: -Get your flu vaccine! -Download an #email badge to let others know you’re a UCSF Flu Fighter at https://ucsf.app.box.com/s/a0ijt8unctrc2aww82sh6jbdwogy2xnj -Check out our #social media channels for #myths and #facts about the flu -Track our community #progress on our Flu Fighter Campaign page at https://studenthealth.ucsf.edu/flu-fighter If the #campus reaches a 100% compliance rate for all students and learners, every student will automatically be entered into a #raffle! Three students will be randomly selected to win a $100 Visa gift card. #Winners will be announced and contacted following the November 1, 2020 deadline. It #pays to get your flu #shot! Thank you and please remind your #network to get their flu shots so we can reach our #goal. Together, we can #protect the health of our #friends and #family and be UCSF Flu Fighters!

"First, the discovery enabled testing for screening blood for the agent that was responsible for blood-borne transmission of hepatitis and liver cancer risk. Second, knowledge of the causative agent facilitated drug development, particularly protease inhibitors that can treat existing hepatitis C virus infections and cure the disease in many cases.

Welcome to Totally Tasty Tuesdays, a weekly highlight of practical, delicious, diverse recipes that will help you develop your culinary skills and, most importantly, feed your face! Shoot us a message if you have a mouth-watering recipe to share. Today’s recipe is: chocolate chip pumpkin muffins! It may not quite feel like it yet in the Bay area, but fall is officially upon us and you know what that means pumpkins! Did you know that pumpkins are technically fruit? They ar...e a winter squash in the family Cucurbitacae, which includes cucumbers and melons. The "pumpkin capital" of the world is Morton, Illinois and over 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkin are produced each year in the United States that’s a lot of pumpkin pie! Speaking of pie, The Guinness World Record for the largest pumpkin pie was set back in September 2010 and tipped the scales at 3,699 pounds. That pie was made with copious amounts of canned pumpkin, evaporated milk, eggs, sugar, salt, cinnamon and pumpkin spice, and it did have a crust a big one, made from 440 sheets of dough. Now that sounds like the kind of Thanksgiving dinner I want to be invited to! Pumpkins are also a great source of nutrition, and contain potassium and Vitamin A. They are 90% water, which makes them a low-calorie food. For today’s Totally Tasty Tuesday, we’re sharing a chocolate chip pumpkin muffin recipe that will really (pumpkin) spice up your day! Head over to our Health Education and Promotion Instagram page (@UCSF_HEP, https://www.instagram.com/ucsf_hep) for the full recipe!

"We'll go to the doctor when we feel flu-ish or a nagging pain. So why don't we see a health professional when we feel emotional pain: guilt, loss, loneliness? Too many of us deal with common psychological-health issues on our own, says Guy Winch. But we don't have to. He makes a compelling case to practice emotional hygiene taking care of our emotions, our minds, with the same diligence we take care of our bodies."

"One reminder from Tjan: Mentorship is a two-way street a relationship between humans and not a transaction. So don’t just march up to people and ask them to advise you. Take the time to develop genuine connections with those you admire, and assist them whenever you can."

"Since the coronavirus pandemic began, President Trump and industry officials have talked a lot about the need to ramp up domestic manufacturing of critical protective gear. But six months on, there are still shortages of all kinds of PPE, like N95 respirator masks, while face shields are easy to find."

With the loss of Ruth Bader Ginsburg last week, many of us are struggling with profound grief, which has been all too common an experience in the past few months with the global pandemic, racial injustice, as well as any personal stressors and losses you may be experiencing. For this week’s We’ve Got This Wednesday, we invite you to try a grief meditation. The mere idea of sitting with the mind our thoughts, feelings, and memories at such a difficult time can feel overw...helming for many people. But what meditation teaches us when grieving is that we can create a space for ourselves: a space of acceptance, a space for healing, and a space, ultimately, for letting go. By letting go, we mean letting go of the tension and any additional thinking that often exacerbates the pain and heartache we are experiencing. No matter how challenging it might initially be to sit and meditate, we meditate to create room for our healing; a safe space that allows us to connect with ourselves, and eventually with the person or thing we are grieving. - Headspace #wevegotthiswednesday #UCSF #Wellness
