Hello Strivers! Just like those horror flicks that keep us away from creepy storm drains or haunted houses in our neighborhoods, people have been staying away from sugary beverages after seeing graphic pictures of health consequences such as obesity, diabetes and tooth decay. According to a study done by Harvard University in a hospital in Massachusetts, consumers appeared to substitute bottled water for sugary drinks after being exposed to warning labels displayed one at a time for a few weeks in the cafeteria, resulting in a 15 percent drop in sugary drink sales. In contrast to the shock factor that these images brought. We hope you stay motivated in limiting your intake of sugary drinks and actively find healthier alternatives without sacrificing the tastes. source: https://consumer.healthday.com//warning-labels-can-scare-f

Healthy eating and an active lifestyle may be hard to come by for our low-income families with a lack of access to the right resources. According to findings recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, studies show that those with access to EBT versus their higher income counterparts had little improvement in the American Heart Association’s 2020 Strategic Impact Goals for diet. https://www.healio.com//snap-participants-do-not-meet-many However, o...rganizations like STRIVE and other community partners help bridge that gap by making EBT available at farmers markets, so that they’re able to get fresh produce. Do you know of other businesses, partnerships, or organizations that help encourage healthy eating habits with use of EBT? How do you think this situation can be solved? Breast feeding is a beautiful practice that supports a healthy diet for your child. More importantly, the properties of breast milk may play an important roll in your child's gut bacteria, which in turn may decrease the effects of childhood obesity. Studies show that babies fed with breast milk had different bacteria or microbiomes in their gut, which led to a decrease in childhood obesity, than children that were fed formula. Happy Wednesday, STRIVERs! Growing up, many of our families in our respective countries of origin depended on a plant-based diet for nutrition, due to lack of access to protein. As we began migration to the U.S., protein that was once scarce has now become a household staple, and a plant-based diet slowly decreased as a dietary norm. However, studies show that going back to a diet with more vegetables and reducing meat can positively impact the body in a variety of ways!
