Street Level Health Project 20.12.2020

A majority of the SLHP team went today to get their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine together. We are grateful to be included in this tier as frontline workers during this pandemic in the Fruitvale that remains as one of the zipcodes with the highest cases and positivity rates. We are posting this picture to show we are leading by example and encourage that as it become available that you get yours too! Although we recognize the privilege of being able to receive it at thi...s time we will continue to advocate for the most vulnerable communities that we serve also get it as soon as possible. This pandemic has highlighted many of the inequities that have existed and the pandemic exacerbated these issues for BIPOC communities.

Today we had our last food distribution of 2020. Between last week and this week we provided 300 food bags/boxes. Last week each person left with a Costco roasted chicken, veggies, and dried goods. This week thanks to our partners at Trybe who helped us connect to one of their suppliers. We were able to give 150 food boxes with great produce that got delivered from the Cental Valley to our doorstep We also provided, clothes, hand sanitizer, and masks. The SLHP team has st...epped it up this year more than ever to ensure our community has the resources they need during this pandemic! We are humbled and honored to this work week in week out. We are taking a break from 12/31/20-1/11/21 to ensure we come back recharged and ready to start 2021 strong! We are grateful that our team was able to collaborate in the making of this video. Happy Holidays from the Street Level Health Project Family! Mientras nos preparamos para las fiestas, queremos compartir este video para recordarles a todos que se mantengan a salvo y se queden en casa estas fiestas. Residents and representatives from a variety of organizations across Alameda County have been invited to support safe, equitable vaccine distribution. While the... State’s framework prioritizes vaccination for different groups of people over four phases, Alameda County has some local control over how those priorities are put into practice. We are seeking input on: vaccine prioritization, how to build more trust, effective messaging and managing misinformation. All meetings will be held via Zoom webinar and open to the public as listen-only attendees, with opportunity for public comment & written Q&A. Meeting notes will be posted regularly here. The first meeting is December 21, 2020 5-6:30pm: Zoom info is https://zoom.us/j/95149644382 or Dial in: 669-900-6833

The SLHP Team has been working extra hard the last couple weeks to get ready for our annual holiday giveaways to day laborers and recently arrived families in Oakland. Although this year we are in a pandemic and we had to adjust this activities we are glad that we are still able to support the community during these difficult times. We kicked of our holiday giveaways this week on Monday by providing around 200 toys! The rest of the week our staff and volunteers and CALMA Of...ficial has safely pre-packaged a couple hundred jackets, clothes and other accessories for men, women, and children and 200 care packages with basic essentials. Later today from 1pm-3pm we are hosting our event for day laborers and their families at the Restore Oakland Parking lot to do a "grab and go" of these items along with 450 to-go meals that will be provided. We are thankful to our other other partners that will be supporting the day like Native American Health Center that will be providing COVID-19 testing, La Clínica de La Raza Cultura y Bienstar program that provided goodie bags, and The People's Mobile. We are thankful to our donors that made this day happen.

Dear SLHP Supporters: We'd like to ask for your participation, if you can, on a quick turnaround project to directly improve wellness in immigrant communities in the one of the areas hardest hit by Covid-19 in Oakland, and Alameda County, CA. When Street Level Health Project offers our annual free flu shots this year, we would like to provide our community members with a free bottle of Vitamin C and Vitamin D3 to help boost their immune systems as we move into the Fall and W...inter months. This is a simple, evidence-based approach that can have wide reaching preventative effects. How can you help? If you can commit to buying 10 bottles of one ($40ish) or both ($80ish) of the supplements from the distributor below, please contact our Nutritionist/herbalist Michelle Steinberg asap at [email protected] for further instructions. We hope to secure 120 bottles of each vitamin in the next ten days for distribution with our free food bags. Your support will assist us in immediately getting these critical nutrients to some of the most vulnerable communities. Again, please email [email protected] asap to confirm your participation. She will then confirm which item for you to order from the links below in your own name and give you Street Level Health Project's mailing address for the shipping address on your order. Here is a unique opportunity for you to directly impact the health and wellness of recent immigrant communities in the Bay Area! Please share this post to help spread the word amongst your colleagues and friends! Many thanks! SLHP continues to support with the ever increasing food insecurity with our weekly food distribution program every Tuesday in providing 110 food bags along with hot meals, USDA boxes, and other basic needs like hand sanitizer, diapers, clothes, etc. We are humbled every week by the stories we hear in food line of the hardships our community continues to face during the pandemic but also the resiliency of our community. This week we started our yearly flu shot distribution. On our first day we provided 58 flu shots! We hope to continue these efforts at the day laborer corners next week. Thank you to the hardworking team if staff and volunteers that keep showing up every week to make this efforts continue.

Check out this story that highlights one of of the day laborers that has participated at Street Level over the last few years and the need to continue to advocate for a Safety net for all! "Undocumented workers make up 10 percent of the workforce in California. Often working as day laborers, domestic workers and other jobs in the informal economy, they contribute over $3.2 billion in taxes, according to the California Budget and Policy Center. For workers like Domingo, sick d...ays are simply not an option. Domingo, 58, tries to take any job that comes his way, but he fell from a ladder while working a painting job, leaving him with chronic pain in his shoulders and arms. Now, he looks for shorter and lighter jobs. Over the years, he taught himself some basic mechanic skills. When jobs are scarce, Domingo will buy a clunker and fix it up to resell for a small profit. These days however, few people are buying cars in the Fruitvale." Some weeks I’ve been able to make some money; others I haven’t been able to make any at all, Domingo said through a translator"
