TRASH TALK. It was the late 60’s and the trash man in our culdesac dropped a can while trying to lift it into the side of the truck (no automatic arms back then...) and garbage went everywhere. My brother ran into our garage and brought the trash man a push broom and dust pan and helped him clean up quickly. The man thanked him, in Spanish, and then waved for him to come to the front of the truck. He reached in the passenger side and pulled out a leather football, nice one, expensive one with hand stitched laces, and handed to my brother. He had most likely fished it out of a trash can earlier and if he had kids was going to surprise them with it. But, because of my brother’s quick act of kindness it went to him. It was the football we used for the next five years to play touch football on our street or tackle at the school. Best football ever. If we were playing in the street when the trash truck pulled in the game would stop and a few passes back and forth with our trash man would happen. Gracias! De Nada! Came across these guys during my walk today just after buying my favorite bagel at my favorite neighborhood bakery about to take it to my favorite place (the be...ach) and enjoy my favorite part of the day...walked around a corner and ran into a man who looked down in his luck, down on life and probably didn’t have too many favorite anything’s. Trust me, a struggle took place inside of me that was finally won by trying to practice what I’m preaching...bagels are fattening anyway. As I handed him the bagel I told him there was cream cheese in the bottom of the bag if he wanted it. I read about a family who went out to breakfast at a pancake house and to make the meal more fun ordered one of every type of pancake and had it delivered to their table on one large platter for all to enjoy. While laughing and eating the mom spotted a man watching them. He was eating his breakfast alone quietly, in the corner. He frequently looked over and smiled. He was enjoying watching her family have so much fun. Suddenly, she had a great idea. She dug out a Smile Ca...rd from the reserve in her purse and snuck up to the waitress. She told her she wanted to pay that man’s bill anonymously and that instead of the bill could she please give him the Smile Card instead of a bill. The waitress came over a bit later and told her that the man had passed the Smile Card on and paid for another table before he left. How great! Not only that though, the waitress then came back later and told the woman the second table had now paid for someone else and passed the Smile Card on also, and later that the third table had done the same thing. By the time the family left, half the room had ended up paying for a different table! I think it’s time to find, print, buy, make some of these Smile Cards and carry them with us. It’s time to get people smiling again. I know times are hard right now and paying for someone’s meal isn’t that easy because extra money is hard to come by just like smiles. Stick Your Neck Out.
