It is with heavy hearts that we report that Dr. Thomas Starzl, commonly regarded as the "Father of Transplantation" - died at his house on Saturday at the age o...f 90. Starzl performed the first successful liver transplant in 1967 at the University of CO in Denver and went on to perform hundreds of liver and kidney transplants, as well as developing anti-rejection drugs at UPMC in Pittsburgh, where he is regarded as a local icon. Here at the American Liver Foundation we salute him as an honorary member of our Board of Directors, and honor a promising liver researcher every year with the Thomas E. Starzl, MD Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. RIP to the one of the biggest liver superheroes ever- Dr. Starzl, you'll be missed, but your legacy will live on and on and on..... See more
