We would like to honor and celebrate the beautiful tradition of Día de los Muertos this season, by creating an interactive experience that you can do with kids or the entire family and celebrate the ones you love. Día de los Muertos or Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday that celebrates the cycle of life and recognizes that death is as important as birth. On Día de los Muertos it’s believed that the border between the spirit world... and the real world dissolve and the two worlds come together to celebrate the departed. The origins of Día de los Muertos are traced back to the month long Aztec festival that celebrated departed ancestors and paid tribute to the "lady of death" Aztec goddess Mictlancíhuatl. Her role was to protect loved ones that had died and to assist them in the afterlife. The month long celebration, had originally taken place in the beginning of summer, the 9th month of the Aztec calendar. Over time, and under the influence of Spanish colonization, the holiday shifted to coincide with the Western Christian triduum of Allhallowtide. In its current day iteration, Día de los Muertos is a beautiful expression of gratitude and celebration of loved ones who have passed. Feasts are prepared with the favorite foods of the deceased. Bright vibrant colors adorn painted faces and painted sugar skulls. Aztec marigolds are the traditional flowers used to decorate. Oferendas, or small shrines, are built in homes to honor the life of the deceased. See more
