While I understand that this isn't the media's top story these days, there are many young men, in their 20's and 30's, even in their 40's, who are trying to build lives and relationships that are compassionate, productive, meaningful, and proactive. Sometimes they face issues of shame, or stories they were taught about who they are, or who they can't be, stories about being fundamentally flawed or "bad." They've been told they were "worthless" or "weak", or without value. If this sounds familiar, and you would like help letting go of depression and anxiety, and help moving forward, please feel free to contact me to make an appointment. https://www.stevelehrmantherapy.com

On Christmas Eve day, the Sundance Channel decided to show, on a continuous loop, the holiday classic, "White Christmas." One of the songs from that film, "Count Your Blessings," was nominated for an Academy Award. The song is deceptively simple. It begins: "When I'm worried and I can't sleep, I count my blessings instead of sheep. And I fall asleep counting my blessings." You're right, I think, if you feel that that sounds over-simplified, but it contains an important ke...rnel of truth. There are many theories about how to create change in our lives. Many of them emphasize where we bring our attention. Certainly, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Positive Psychology, and Solution-Focused Therapy are three examples where we develop habits of attending to the parts of our lives that we feel are going well. As it turns out, Irving Berlin's classic song wasn't created by accident. Berlin wrote that, after listening to Berlin's complaints about his life one day, his therapist made a modest suggestion-- "Instead of focusing on what's wrong, why not count your blessings?" And so, he wrote a classic song. This is not an answer to life's challenges, of course. It's a practice. Adversities are inevitable in life. And neurobiology is complex. Moods, even feelings of despair, can strike.. But the practice of repeatedly bringing our attention back to our blessings, our pluses, whatever we deem them to be, can be part of a transition to better mental health. Narrative Therapy asks, "What is the story that you carry about yourself? And what else might be included?" And yes, Oprah Winfrey popularized the idea of keeping a gratitude diary. You decide for yourself what to do, of course. But, perhaps you could consider counting your blessings, and see how that feels. Happy New Year. Steve
