For years, I met regularly with a group of young teens and high school girls who shared how their feelings about themselves were deeply impacted by what other girls said to them. We discussed how to really feel, deep inside ourselves, that we are loveable. I would tell them You do not need to try to prove you are loveable. You know you are loveable. The girls then surrounded themselves with friends that felt the same way. They encouraged me to share a compilation of their stories, and what happened to others girls they knew, in hopes their stories would help others. "I wrote whole heart for girls because I see so many of them struggling with self-esteem. They are easily derailed and feel badly about themselves, taking everything as criticism. I put the book together from the stories I have used in therapy through the years. Stories that girls found helpful in feeling good about themselves. Some of it started out years ago with a child about 8. She felt she was not pretty enough, smart enough or anything enough. We made a wand out of a s...tick and a star and I walked her over to a mirror. I stood behind her, while she looked at herself in the mirror. Then I asked her to click her heels together three times and repeat I am loveable. She cried and said I actually feel more loveable and then she practiced at home. It changed everything for her and she encouraged me to do this for other girls, especially the part where I explain where self-esteem comes from. This is what started me on the whole heart journey.
