Happy December, Friends! What do you think of Arabella, the six-year-old granddaughter of Donald Trump that stole the show in China with performance in Mandarin? And if you haven't already watched Jim Rogers's two daughters Happy and Bee's tongue twister, click the link below. Countless native Chinese speakers were blown away by their perfect pronunciation and enunciation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IzF4scZU2Q... All these three children started learning Mandarin EARLY, and they learned the language in a FUN, MEANINGFUL way. Examples like these prompted us to reflect on the Chinese language learning environment in the Bay Area, especially for the heritage speakers. There are not many quality programs and most of them are lacking of fun and rigor. As a result, students find conventional Chinese schools boring and irrelevant to their daily lives in the US. Sadly, many chose to give up on learning Chinese and some of them even became resentful. How can we make Chinese learning stick? First of all, we teach students in consistent ways with their home schools. Second, we immerse students in real life settings for language and culture enrichment. Third, we pick age-appropriate topics that children actually care about. Lastly, we instill the power of literature in students, and we emphasize character recognition, sentence construction, and vocabulary retention. It is our ultimate goal for students to apply the language and literacy skills in their daily lives and future career opportunities. We are hosting an Information Session for our new Debate and Story Telling Program on December 9, 2017 at 1069 E Meadow Cir. Palo Alto, CA 94303 in Room 206. Claire demonstrated exceptional knowledge and capabilities to implement cutting edge learning curriculum. We are inspired to understand some of the big paradigm shifts and innovation that is occurring in K-8 learning and we really appreciate Claire’s thought leadership to bring these teaching approaches to life for our daughter and the school. With respect to Claire in particular, we both feel like we won a lottery for our daughter. -Nickolas Kaposhilin and Lisa Boey (Palo Alto) Read more what parents have to say, please visit http://stanfordchineseacademy.com/about.html
