The term behavior management always leaves a negative connotation in my brain. When I think of traditional behavior management, I think of it is behavior manip...ulation. At least this is my experience with it when working in a traditional preschool classroom. I was guilty of the star charts and I love the way Jada is keeping her hands to herself and the behavior charts. That was before I knew better. Now I know those are all manipulation tactics to get kids to do more of what WE (the adults) think they should be doing to prove we are filling their brains with what WE think they should be filled with. A manager is seen as a person who manages other people. We shouldn’t be the managers of these children and their behaviors. We need to support them with connection, relationship, words to say, and modeling. Less managing, more attention. Less managing, more caring. Less managing, more facilitating.

Repost from Thriving Littles We can "see" someone without truly seeing them. With the pace that life can happen, it is often the norm until we can find another way. When we create space and begin to slow, we open opportunities to see our loved ones and those around us.... Why does this matter? A sense of being "seen" promotes safety, authentic connection, the foundation of all regulation, engagement, and learning. Not seen for just what we "do" - but who we are at the core. How can we see the littles and those around us today? What gets in the way? Typical precursor: seeing ourselves first. Here are a few places to start. Would you ignore your friend or partner who is crying on the couch next to you? Would you ignore them if they suddenly got so overwhelmed with the environment ...and circumstance around them that they were struggling? I know I wouldn’t. Because I have a relationship with them. And I want to keep that relationship solid with trust and love. So why do we ignore children when they are struggling? Or when they are crying because they cry all the time? When put this way, it sounds downright mean and rude to ignore them. When children need attention (replace the word attention with the word relationship) , they don’t always know how to ask. So they seek that relationship in ways that may be overwhelming or annoying or redundant to you. So next time, think how can I make this relationship stronger? And maybe you’ll be surprised at the outcome. For more information on this topic, check out Tamar Jacobson’s book, ‘Everyone Needs Attention’!
