Nov 4 Blessed Memorial of St. Charles Borromeo, Bishop! Charles Borromeo was born in 1538 near Milan. His father was Count of Arona and his mother a member of the House of Medici. When he was 12, Charles dedicated himself to the Church, telling his father that he would only keep money needed for his education. All other funds were given to the poor. In 1554 his father died and Charles, age 16, took responsibility for his household. He also earned a doctorate in canon an...d civil law. Charles’ uncle became Pope Pius IV in 1559. The new pope asked Charles to come to Rome, appointed him a cardinal-deacon, and assigned him duties that included governing the Papal States, and supervision of the Knights of Malta, the Franciscans, and the Carmelites. In 1560 Charles discerned a calling to the priesthood. He was ordained Sep 4, 1563, ordained a bishop on Dec 7, 1563, and became Archbishop of Milan in 1564. Corruption was rampant. Charles saw clearly that the greatest defense against Protestant doctrinal errors and claims against the hierarchy was reform and the restoration of integrity. His strategy was to provide education to clergy he saw as ignorant, founding schools and seminaries. He ended the selling of indulgences, and ordered monasteries to reform themselves. His work made him enemies and he survived an assassination attempt. In 1576 famine and the plague struck Milan. Many of the wealthy and powerful fled. Archbishop Borromeo remained, using his own money and then going deep into debt to feed as many as 70,000 starving people per day. In 1583, Charles went to Switzerland to work suppressing heresy and founded the Collegium Helveticum to educate Swiss Catholics. In 1584, he became ill and died at the age of 46. He was canonized by Pope Paul V in 1610. St. Charles Borromeo is the patron of bishops, catechists, cardinals, seminarians, and spiritual leaders. St. Charles Borromeo, pray for us! www.sjboc.org

Nov 3 Blessed Memorial of St. Martin de Porres. Martin was born in Peru in 1579, illegitimate son of a Spanish gentlemen and a freed slave. At a young age, Martin's father abandoned the family, leaving them to live in deep poverty. Martin was ridiculed for being of mixed-race. In Peru, by law, descendants of African or Indians were not allowed to become full members of religious orders. Martin spent long hours in prayer and found his way into the community he longed for by ...asking the Dominicans of Holy Rosary in Lima to let him volunteer for menial tasks. In return, he was allowed to wear the habit and live within the community. When Martin was 15, he was received as a servant boy, and eventually given charge of distributing money to the poor. After 8 years, the prior (disregarding the racial law) gave him permission to take vows in the 3rd Order of St Dominic. Not all members in the Holy Rosary were as open-minded; Martin was called horrible names. He became a lay brother in 1603, and was assigned to the infirmary where he was praised for his unconditional care of people, taking care of everyone from Spanish nobles to African slaves. Martin founded an orphanage for abandoned children and slaves. He had extraordinary abilities, including bilocation, instant cures, and an excellent relationship with animals. During an epidemic, many friars became ill and were locked in a distant section of the convent. On more than one occasion, Martin passed through the locked doors to care for them. In early 1639, Martin became ill with fevers and tremors causing him agonizing pain until he died on Nov 3. Talk of his miracles was everywhere, and when he was exhumed 25 years later, his body exhaled a splendid fragrance and was still intact. St. Martin de Porres was beatified by Pope Gregory XVI in 1837 and canonized by Pope John XXIII in 1962. He is patron of people of mixed race, innkeepers, barbers, and public health workers. Nov 2 Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed Today is commonly known as All Souls' Day, and is a solemn celebration in the Church commemorating all who have died and whose souls are now in Purgatory, being cleansed of their venial sins and the temporal punishments for the mortal sins that they had confessed, and being made pure before entering into the presence of God in Heaven. On All Souls Day, we remember the dead, and we apply our efforts, through prayer and the Mas...s, to their release from Purgatory. There are two plenary indulgences attached to All Souls Day, one for visiting a church and another for visiting a cemetery. Praying for the dead is a Christian obligation. In today’s world, when many have come to doubt the Church's teaching on Purgatory, the need for such prayers has only increased. The Church devotes the month of November to prayer for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, and participation in the Mass of All Souls Day is a good way to begin the month. If we had no care for the dead, we would not be in the habit of praying for them. -St. Augustine www.sjboc.org

Nov 1 Joyful Solemnity of All Saints from St. John the Baptist Parish and School! The custom of keeping holy one day in the year as the festival of all God’s saints, whether commemorated in the Liturgy or not, dates back to at least the beginning of the Fifth Century. Although millions, or even billions, of people may already be saints, All Saints' Day observances tend to focus on known saints --that is those recognized in the canon of the saints by the Church. The chil...dren who attend St. John the Baptist Catholic School saints in the making happily anticipated this great feast by dressing up as their favorite saints on Friday, Oct 30! Early in the morning the boys and girls arrived in full regalia, but also ready to study! They went to their classes where they were visited by costume adjudicators (a team comprised of SJB Pastor Fr. Augustine, School Rector Fr. Damien, and School Principal Mrs. Paula Viles). Best saint in each classroom was a combination of best costume + knowledge about the saint being depicted. Following lunch we had the 2020 version of a long-standing SJB school tradition the awesome parade of the Saints, accompanied by, what else, When the Saints Go Marchin’ In! This year's parade took place on our field, with the children marching between rows of parked cars containing enthusiastic parents, grandparents, and family members. In ancient times this feast was usually called the Feast of All Holy Martyrs. The day of its celebration varied. Pope St. Boniface IV, when dedicating the Roman Pantheon as the Church of Our Blessed Lady and all Holy Martyrs, appointed November 1 for the chief annual festival in the sacred building. Gregory III built an oratory at St. Peter’s in honor of all the saints, confessors as well as martyrs, who had died in all parts of the world. Gregory IV chose November 1 as the Feast of All Saints. www.sjboc.org
