Some things to consider if you operate and maintain wooden boats. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhp6lPQVSec

A common question at Quartermaster Board of Reviews is What was your most memorable day in Sea Scouts? Summer Cruise 1979 SSS Corsair had sailed two whaleboats, Corsair and Curlew up the San Joaquin River and gone south around some large islands. On the second day, headed northeast we encountered a broken drawbridge. Instead of spending two days retracing our course, we spent several hours thusly: we anchored the whaleboats alongside each other, moved everything not screwed... down from Corsair onto Curlew, then derigged all the standing rigging off Curlew and used Corsair’s taller mast to pull the mast out of Curlew. Then we towed Curlew under the bridge with the skiff and anchored north of the bridge. I was a Crew Leader and my crew, Bow Crew was selected to take Corsair under the bridge, fully rigged except for sails. We towed Corsair up to the bridge with the skiff and it’s 15 hp outboard where just before we hit the bridge we all swung out on the halyards and flopped her over on her side, continuing under the bridge that way. Then we climbed onto the keel and righted her, bailed her out, tied her up alongside Curlew, replaced Curlew’s mast and rigging and transferred all the gear back onto Corsair. I was so tired when we finished I fell asleep lying on Corsair’s rail. Luckily Bow didn’t have galley that night. We had our camp stove and stainless steel bucket of Dinty Moore beef stew for our bellies and slept on deck anchored in the middle of the backwater slough watching shooting stars. That’s how whaleboat scouts do it. Steven Welch, Corsair QM 1981, currently Mate and Council Commodore. See more

Annual swamping drill. This doesn’t show up righting Corsair, which is just a few scouts standing on the fin and up she comes. Bailing ensues and all is well again. This video was shared on Sea Scouts BSA and picked up by world Sea Scouting and was last shared on the Romanian Sea Scout page.

Sea Scouts, BSA deserves to remain as a traditional scouting program! Sea Scouts is not just a group that teaches kids about jobs at sea. Not even close. Removi...ng Sea Scouts from the traditional structure of the BSA and putting it under Exploring (as the Churchill Plan states) will remove the Scout Oath and Law from Sea Scouts. It will remove the duties to God, country and self from the program. It will remove the OA from the program. Lastly, Sea Scouts won't be known as Sea Scouts anymore. I'd assume it would be Sea Explorers. Sea Scouts is over 108 years old and it is one of the premier programs for older youth anywhere in the world. I joined Sea Scouts back when I was 13 years old, meaning I've been Sea Scouting close to 4 years now. I've had the opportunity to participate in many amazing adventures and challenges. Sea Scouting means a lot to me, I've made many new friends across the country just by being a Sea Scout. I volunteered to be a youth leader in the Sea Scouts because I wanted to see it grow, I wanted to give back to this program. Many amazing adults have poured countless hours and even days of work into my scouting career and my life in general. As a result of all of this, I am a Quartermaster Sea Scout currently sitting on the National Sea Scout Quarterdeck with some other OUTSTANDING youth that want to give back and serve their shipmates interests. In conclusion, Sea Scouts and the BSA program in general made me who I am. They helped form my style of leadership, and they instilled in me: Duty to God, Duty to Country, and the Duty to Self. If you remove Sea Scouts from the Scouting program, it cheats the future generation of youth from the opportunities and lessons that I and many of my colleagues have learned. SO! Please do your part in reminding the National Key Three that the Sea Scout program is not only important to the Scouting movement, but it's important to the Scouts like me who have learned so much from this program.
