I know youth sports leagues are anxious to get rolling. Trust me, I'd love to see them get going as well. However, just because things are starting to 'open' up... doesn't mean that we should be full 'guns a'blazing' with tournaments and games. Several things to consider 1. Most kids haven't been practicing, and if so, not regularly. If you want them to get hurt right away and then have to be out...go right ahead and jump into games and tournaments. One of the biggest contributing factors of patients I see injured in my office are the above scenario. 2. Can your sport truly offer social distancing in a way that does not potentially detract from the integrity of the sport? I've seen lots of posts recently about baseball and softball ready to get going next weekend already. How exactly do you keep 6 feet of distance at the bases, or with catcher and batter just to think of a few scenarios. 3. Why not take it slow, maybe looking at practicing first, if social distancing is followed. 'Opening up' was not intended to be a 0-60 approach. 4. Finally, if pro sports haven't yet been able to figure out how to start sports again, WITHOUT fans, and their billions of dollars in resources, top docs advising their teams, testing that probably (for better or worse) is more easily accessible than the average American...how is it that your local youth sports league have figured out the approach that will be the safest for the players, coaches, parents and refs/umps? Competitive youth sports will get going soon....let's not make it too soon....for all sorts of reasons.
Wise words from a fabulous pediatrician:
It’s healthier to play multiple sports, higher injury risk in kids specializing early!
I'll keep saying this until I'm blue in the face. Early specialisation is not the best way to create top athletes
http://connect.chla.org//TR/Wal/WalkTeamRaiser/1530587747 I know I’ve mentioned this to a few of you but if you’re looking for something to do next weekend...Just wanted to share this fun event that includes a family walk and sports stations where kids get to learn from pro athletes! We will be there! It’s fun and supports a good cause

Just wanted to spread the word about our upcoming Sports Medicine Conference at StubHub 11/11. Great for Primary Care Docs as well as medical professionals with kids in sports. Open to MD/DOs, nurses, nurse practioners, physician assistants, MAs, PTs, ATCs, and more. Hope to see some of the LA PMGs! Let me know if you have any questions :)
Approximately 40 million American kids compete in sports, and the rate of injuries is on the rise. There are also factors such as stress and burnout affecting k...ids on the field, in the pool and on the court. That's why the Children's Hospital Los Angeles is partnering with a non-profit organization called Positive Coaching Alliance L.A. They want to help parents and coaches recognize the signs of injury and help prevent more issues that come with youth sports programs. See more
