This year, we did a lot of internal work in terms of taking stock, really digging into our mission, strategies, and goals, and did real work (which continues) developing programs to better serve our surrounding community. Spokeland has strived for and become an organization with more focused intentionality within itself and the community it serves. We’re ready to move purposefully into the future. Our friends at Waterside Workshops had ready-to-ride kids bikes to give away, and asked if we could help get them out into the community. We joined up with our neighbor New Hope Baptist Church for their Toy Giveaway to give out 19 bikes. We gave each new bike owner a new helmet, and made sure they're ready for action with riding and safety skills. In taking this unplanned opportunity, we had to act fast and spring for helmets. There will be a rally at Mosswood park then march to McDonald's on Telegraph. Come with your bike and we will ride a bit around Oakland after the action, making noise and showing folks that we are still here and still fighting for #BLACKLIVESMATTER"

The Bikery is doing a mutual aid bike repair day this Sunday, 7/12 from 11am-5pm at Eastside's Garage - the corner lot on 23rd Ave and e12th St. The intention is to support folks doing hella organizing labor, by helping keep Black movement folks rolling. They will be doing free safety checks and minor repairs for the community. Please note that for larger repairs, or for new parts, there may be a charge. Go out to ELI'S MILE HIGH CLUB today before 6pm to support Hasta Muerte Coffee, who are attempting to buy their building for their business and tenants!

Hasta Muerte Coffee is trying to buy their building to secure affordable rent for themselves and long-time low-income tenants who live above the building. They are a POC, worker-owned coffee shop & radical bookstore located at 2701 Fruitvale Ave. After HMC renovated the building, the landlord is trying to sell the building, but HMC has the right to match the offer. "The Collective is working with the Oakland Community Land Trust to buy the building in an alternative ownership structure that combats community deterioration through the acquisition and stewardship of land and affordable housing to permanently benefit low income residents." One of our youngest volunteers passed away. Rest in Peace Malakai. :(

Spokeland will be CLOSED tomorrow, Sunday June 4! We have no volunteers available to staff the Sunday shift, so the shop will be closed that day. We apologize for the inconvenience this will cause. There is a critical need for volunteers to help patrons during Sunday shifts. If you would like to help people in your community fix their bikes, you could make a big difference for Spokeland by volunteering on Sundays!

Weather's going to be nice this weekend, even this guy's getting a ride in.
