Trauma After Critical Illness - When I conversed with a psychiatrist in Italy a couple of months ago, he suggested that one of the greatest challenges of COVID-19 was helping people with trauma. Check out SBH's recent blog to learn more... https://specialtybehavioralhealth.com/trauma-after-critica/

Teletherapy is available for California residents using 100% electronic interactions (including intake and all other forms). We use encrypted software that meets HIPAA standards to protect your privacy. Most insurance companies reimburse the same as for in-person visits (call yours to check). CONNECTING SUICIDAL CLIENTS WITH APPROPRIATE PROVIDERS Believe it or not, there are multiple specialized therapy approaches with strong empirical support to help people prevent suicide. The approach I use most frequently in my practice, Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) appears best suited for clients in treatment with suicidal thinking, but minimal history of past attempts. For people who have chronic emotional dysregulation and multiple suicide... attempts, Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a better fit. The other approaches with strong support are Cognitive Therapy for Suicide Prevention and Brief Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Seeking help can be a challenging process, especially when a person is suicidal. Finding out the therapist is not the right fit and switching to a different one can waste precious time and energy. So, if possible, do some fact finding beforehand and ask pointed questions (e.g., "Which models are you trained to use?") so you can select a provider that is proficient at conducting thorough assessments and capable of providing evidence based interventions that match your or your loved one's needs. Unfortunately, most people with suicidal ideation do not seek professional help, but they can receive crisis intervention and support for free at Lifeline by calling 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Thanks for all recent page 'Likes!' Dr. Carter is participating in Teletherapy Training led by Dr. Marlene Maheu and sponsored by APA. She has predicted that teletherapy may become the new norm (vs in office therapy) in next 10 years. What do you think?

Updated depression treatment guidelines by American Psychological Association ... Specific treatment models (e.g., CBT) have stronger empirical support...Different approaches work for different people - not one size fits all...Ongoing assessment and feedback are important for any intervention...Nothing shocking, but great resource for clients and all health care providers. Proud to be APA member. https://www.apa.org/depression-guideline
