Special Olympics SLO County would like to recognize and thank volunteers: DUSTIN & STEPHANIE WISE Swim Coaches... We sat down (virtually) with Dustin and Stephanie about their roles with Special Olympics and what got them "hooked." Here's what they had to say: SO: What has been your role with Special Olympics SLO County? DW: I am the coach for the SLO Special Olympic Swim Team. Together with my wife Stephanie Wise and coach extraordinaire Mark Bailey, we guide swimmers during the spring season towards improved fitness and better swim proficiency. SO: How long have you been volunteering and/or been involved with Special Olympics? DW: 5 years for myself and around 9 years for my wife as she has been volunteering since college at Cal Poly. SO: What brought you to SpO? How did you get connected? DW: I was a collegiate swimmer and looking for a way to stay connected to the sport. I met Michael Lara, Jody (Watty), and the whole team at the office and knew it was the perfect fit. SO: What’s been your best memory or experience with Special Olympics so far? DW: I tell people that this is easily the happiest and chattiest group of swimmers I've ever been around. The energy that they bring to practice is contagious and our favorite parts of practice are either coaches vs swimmer races or our warm-up dance parties. My favorite memory at a competition would probably be watching our swimmers cheer each other on or seeing our relays compete where the swimmers are all working together. SO: What’s one thing you’d like to do with Special Olympics that you haven’t done yet? Perhaps a new volunteer role or a new activity within the role you already have? DW: Having only volunteered for swimming and tennis I'd love to help and see some other sports in action. SO: What do you hope for Special Olympics in the next 10 years? DW: I'd love to see the swim season expand, maybe offering summer swim options during the warm months. I also would love to see more local competitions. SO: What is a fun fact about you? DW: I love playing the ukulele and during a typical year, I substitute teach. I also run a video production company called Wise Studio where I specialize in filming local events, corporate videos, drone videos, and cooking shows. thewisestudio.com THANK YOU, Dustin and Stephanie, we couldn't do it without you!
