Yesterday, 4-29-10 headed with Jim G. to my favorite remote Southern California creek in search of aggressive wild rainbow trout. The spot is brutal to reach, a thousand foot drop into a canyon. Plus, the poison oak and nettles were in bloom. We legally were fine with the virus and forest closures. Conditions were real high water, yet seemed to get the trout stirred up. Fishing dries we hooked all the fish we wanted in every pool. Fished a bigger pool with a sinking dual nymph rig and had two "doubles", trout on each of the two flies at same time. Hike back up mountain vicious. Cant feel my legs today. Good time to start to get out and search for fish all over the region. Going to take it easy on the next trip. Anyone else been out?

GOLDENS!! These colorful trout (the California State freshwater fish) can be reached via a minimum two hour hike in the Eastern Sierra or even a 4 x 4 offroad trip. I am excited to get up there this summer and see these fish again. These fish were caught on elk hair caddis and similar dry flies, and on dropper nymphs including copper johns and pheasant tails.

My comprehensive video entitled "Southern California Backcountry Fly Fishing" will help you in many ways catch the larger, more difficult trout to catch like these amazing, wild rainbow trout from various regions of Southern California, from the Cleveland National Forest north. Small, young, trout are aggressive, more reckless and thus much easier to fool locally. Yet, if you want to really improve your opportunity to fool large Southern California wild rainbow and brown trout (fish over 16 inches long) watch my video. Anyone visit the West Fork of the San Gabriel River lately?

Guide trip yesterday 3-8-20 in the San Bernardinos. Water running high and cold, clear. Had three rises and a nice hookup with stimulator dry flies. Then moved on to a very small creek full of small beautiful rainbow trout and got many rises to small elk hair caddis dries. Here is a pic of a real pretty specimen.

Mark's Desert Ecological Tours - starting June I will be guiding groups of up to 5 to the deserts near Anza Borrego and Borrego Springs at twilight and nighttime. Fun for the family and individuals who want to encounter a myriad of wildlife and stars under the desert sky. All wildlife left back in the wild. Opportunities will exist to hold some of the harmless reptiles such as banded geckos and rosy boas. Camera phones will be perfect. Ideally stop on way to famous Julian for some fresh apple pie. Get your reservation soon as this wildlife window is small due high temperatures once we hit July. A once in a lifetime opportunity. Fees are 550.00 for a group of five. 150.00 per person is any smaller group. Please send personal message or call me direct at 858.922.0237

Yesterday we ventured out south of LA after waiting a week of heavy rains. A brown trout spot. Not sure if we could get the fish to rise in super cold water. We saw fish pinned to the bottom not moving. We caught a few fish on elk hair caddis. Water levels good. Spring will be good.

Yesterday one thousand foot drop into canyon filled with wild rainbows. Can't feel my legs today due to climb up. May hang it up for good for this spot. Just too gnarly. Most fish healthy. Fished stimulators and bugs for around 50 fish. Nothing large for this SoCal watershed.

DESERT NOCTURAL ECOLOGICAL TOURS 2018 These 3 to 3.5 hour night time trips are super fun. We head out just before dark to observe the many reptiles and amphibians that only come out at night including rosy boas, shovel nose snakes, geckos, sidewinders and much more. You will see many animals, bats, owls, and others that thrive at night in the desert. We also do a fun scorpion search with our special UV lights (as seen in picture). These trips are safely managed, perfect for k...ids. Took Julien who is 8 last night and he was thrilled to catch geckos and see a sidewinder in action. We just observe and hold all reptiles and amphibians we find inside the State Park. I wait all year for these trips that only occur from June to mid July. Please email or call me soon to book a trip. Most trips occur near Palm Springs and Borrego Springs. Don't miss out, few know about these adventures. One of the coolest things a family or friends can do! See more
