Meet some people in the neighborhood By: Julie Drake ... LITTLEROCK - Visitors and locals who travel down Pearblossom Highway can learn the stories of 20 local residents whose faces grace the walls of local buildings in downtown Littlerock. Positively Littlerock is a three-month-long installation of large-scale black-and-white portrait photographs taken by local photographer Austin LaCroix. The installation features a diverse collection of everyday people who work, or worked, along the roadway including a mechanic, retired teacher, dancer, nurseryman, restaurant owner, student, shopkeeper, and retired postal worker. "The idea was to bring outside from the inside the people who work right along the business corridor in Littlerock," Project Director Robin Rosenthal said. The project kicks off with a free community event from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot between Que Paisa Restaurant and Studio 8135 on Pearblossom Highway. There will be food vendors, a selfie stand and music by Highway 138. The goal of the project is to celebrate local history, share individual stories, and reflect community identity. The 7-foot-by-9-foot portraits start at about 77th Street East and continue east and stop at Alpine School near 82nd Street East. Teacher Cyndi Smith Murlock, who retired from Keppel Union School District on Wednesday after more than 40 years, worked at each of the district's schools. Her portrait is on Alpine School next to that of former Keppel teacher and current board member Jannie Dutton. "I was very honored to be selected," Murlock said, adding she is getting a lot of feedback from former students on Facebook. The outdoor photo installation was inspired by French artist who creates large-scale displays by wheat-pasting portraits on buildings all over the world. The Littlerock portraits were also printed with a wheat-paste method. "It may not last quite as long as we hope temporary means," Rosenthal said. The portraits were printed and installed by Palmdale-based Signs & Designs. "I can't say enough positive about the amount of help that they have given us," Rosenthal said. Positively Littlerock is part of Real93543, a creative place-making project for the unincorporated communities of Littlerock, Sun Village, and the greater Southeast Antelope Valley. Created in 2015 by artist-in-residence Robin Rosenthal for the Antelope Valley Art Outpost initiative, Real93543 is managed by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, and is a project of Fulcrum Arts' Emerge fiscal sponsorship program. The public art is part of an interactive project that includes audio interviews with the featured locals. Visitors to the real93543.org can click on a portrait and listen to oral histories collected and archived by the Southeast Antelope Valley Historical Society. There are additional pins to open images of historically significant sites along the installation's route, for an interactive experience that will resonate on and off the highway. Project Partners are Los Angeles County Arts Commission, the Office of Supervisor Kathryn Barger, Lancaster Museum & Public Art Foundation, Fulcrum Arts, Signs + Designs, Southeast Antelope Valley Historical Society, Austin LaCroix Photography, Kulture Shoq Studios, and Studio 8135. Littlerock Town Council member Jeffrey Moldy Marvin Hillinger recorded some of the interviews at his home studio. "We scheduled them for an interview and we just asked them very simple questions about their lives and they just talked," he said. The interviews lasted anywhere from 45 minutes to 90 minutes. Hillinger edited them for the project. Hillinger noted the people who are featured in the exhibit are of all races and ages and who have lived in the community anywhere from 10 years to their whole lives. During Spring Vacation, 1917, Bob Hutton of Santa Monica took a trip with friends to Little Rock and the desert. More trips followed later that year and in 1919 and 1920. Here are a few photos from his album. Why are there no pictures of the Dam? It hadn't been built yet.
