The Violet Richardson Youth in Service Award recognizes young women or girls who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts such as: fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment; and working to end discrimination and poverty. Volunteer ...actions that benefit women or girls are especially valued. Soroptimist is an organization of women whose members volunteer in their communities, often working on the same problems that you do. Although we realize that volunteering is its own reward, we also know it feels good to be recognized for your actions. We would like to introduce you to our Member of the Month, Nancy Hanson. Nancy is the Recording Secretary for our club. Nancy has been a member of Soroptimist International of Chico since 2015. Below are the questions we asked and her answers: Question: What are some of the jobs you have done?... Answer: Labor & Delivery RN, Post Anesthesia Care Unit RN, Asst. Director of Outpatient Surgery, Director of Outpatient Surgery Question: Who are your family members (include pets)? Answer: Linn husband, Claire/Jeremy and Sara/Scott daughters & husbands Spencer, Emma, Charlotte, Lyla and Landon grandkids Question: What are you really good at? Answer: My 6th grade report card said I was too bossy. I think I was able to take from that and learn how to be an effective leader in my profession. I’m good at being a grandma because I enjoy playing and having adventures with my grandkids. Question: What is your favorite kind of music? Answer: 60’s & 70’s Rock Question: What are your hobbies? Answer: I like to spend time with my family, reading, gardening, hiking, trying new recipes, and attending concerts (maybe again someday). Question: What does a perfect day look like to you? Answer: Sunny and cool. Being outside, walking along a stream, hearing my grandchildren laugh. This is both amazing and exciting! Soroptimist International of Vancouver, BC (Soroptimist International Western Canada Region) is working with a local developm...ent firm to provide 135 units of long-term social housing for single mothers and their children, women in the workforce, and senior women. As a result of the over-representation of women in low-wage work, women commonly must choose between paying rent or putting food on the table. Mounting evidence shows that women with low incomes have acute housing needs, are at greater risk of living in unsafe and unhealthy environments, and require access to stable and affordable housing. #SoroptimistsAtWork

Our last program of 2020 is Wednesday, Dec. 16th @ Noon. We will be hearing from Program Director Jodene Setera with the Salvation Army’s George Walker Drug Rehabilitation Jodene is a CSUC graduate and Registered Addictions Specialist, certified through the State of California. She is also an alumni of the Adult Rehabilitation Program in 2008. Jodene oversees the counseling and program staff to insure that beneficiaries of the program are provided with comprehensive case pl...ans that include one on one counseling, group therapy, trauma counseling, relapse prevention and transitional planning.
