Coming of age celebration for my friend, Leah. She wore my kimono by Itchiku Kubota, a Japanese textile artist and most famous for reviving and reinventing a lost late-15th- to early-16th-century textile dyeing technique known as Tsujigahana. My mother took me to a kimono exhibit in Sendai, Japan when I was 16 and I chose this kimono for my own coming of age celebration. [ 29 more words ] https://makiaizawa.com/leah/

Otsukimi Otsukimi (moon viewing) is a Japanese festival honoring the autumn moon. This year the celebration of the full moon was from October 1 through 4th. Even though our focus has been on the wild fires here in Sonoma and Napa, we still honored this Otsukimi tradition by displaying "susuki" (Japanese pampas grass) and eating dango (rice dumplings) in order to celebrate the beauty of the moon. ... This week, I was asked to answer what wabi-sabi means to me and how it ties into the art of Kintsugi. To me, wabi-sabi is an expression of the way in which I experience beauty. Both a description and a perception, wabi-sabi is that subtle and yet profound sensation I recognize when I am moved by the natural and imperfect beauty of an object or work of art. By explicitly revealing the perfection/imperfection that exists in all things, Kintsugi brings this duality of nature to a satisfying and often poignant reconciliation. Even while fires and other destructive facts come and go in the world, I believe that there is space to honor the perfection and imperfection. #otsukimi #moonviewing #wabisabi #kintsugi #japaneseheritage #dango #susuki #culturalexchange #japanesetradition #sonoma # # See more

. It is shocking when our normal life breaks apart. We are experiencing this with the Covid pandemic and now most recently with the protests over the brutal killing of George Floyd. In our sadness and anger, we are acknowledging the need for drastic reform. ... Hopefully, our world will come back together in a new and better way. As we rebuild our world, it is possible for each individual to create a different life, not just to repair it but to reimagine our broken pieces into something better. This is the art of Kintsugi. Last month, I accidentally broke my favorite coffee maker that I had been using religiously every morning. I was quite upset until I realized I could resurrect it using the Kintsugi techniques I have learned from artisan Tomomi Kamoshita. I took these photos to show you how my repair job transformed my coffee maker into an even more beautiful object than before. We continue to offer individual online Kintsugi lessons. We appreciate all of you who have already signed up for the summer program. We are looking forward to seeing you. https://culturalexchange-sonoma.com//modern-kintsugi-at-h/ See more
