January is National Blood Donor Month! The American Red Cross and Blood Banks of America encourage everyone who can donate to continue their donations. Those who have never donated, to make an appointment. Blood donation is safer than ever before and saves lives. Millions of people including cancer patients, organ recipients, and victims of accidents, rely on blood donations from people like you and I. Some fun facts you should know:... 1. About 36,000 units of red blood cells and 7,000 units of platelets are needed every single day in the U.S. 2. The most requested blood type by hospitals is type O. This kind of blood can be transfused to patients of all blood types, so it’s always in great demand and very short supply. Only 7% of people in the U.S. have type O. 3. A single car accident victim may need up to 100 pints of blood to survive. 4. About 6.8 million people donate blood every year in the U.S. 5. 38% of our population is eligible to donate, but less than 10% actually do. 6. Donating blood is a simple, safe process. All you have to do is register, take a mini medical history test, donate, and then accept free refreshments like water, Gatorade, granola bars, etc. 7. A single donation from a single patient can help more than one person. #NationalBloodDonorMonth #GiveBlood

Caregiving is an admirable job, and during COVID-19 it’s been even more important. But caregivers are prone to burnout. Did you know dogs can help? They keep residents calm. They provide emotional support. They can adapt to changing environments.

Happy Kwanzaa everyone! Kwanzaa is a celebration that honors African heritage in African-American culture. Every year from December 26 January 1, Kwanzaa brings people together for feasts, gift-giving, and the celebration of family, community and culture. The name Kwanzaa comes from the phrase matunda ya kwanza which means first fruits in Swahili. On each of the seven nights of Kwanzaa, families gather and light one of the seven candles on the Kinara, which is a candle ...holder. Once this is done, one of the seven principles of Nguzo Saba are discussed among the family. These principles are values of African culture: 1. Unity 2. Self-determination 3. Collective work and responsibility 4. Cooperative Economics 5. Purpose 6. Creativity 7. Faith This month, do your own research on the history and meaning of Kwanzaa to learn more and appreciate the reason it came about in the first place. Whether you are African-American or not, you are encouraged to take part! #Kwanzaa

December is National Aids Awareness Month. Why is this important? It reminds us to get tested. Getting tested regularly is important. Take some time during AIDS Awareness Month to go get tested and know your status. History is important. Although no longer a death sentence, AIDS was, for years, a terrifying global pandemic that devastated communities and families. There are many misconceptions. Many people still don’t have accurate information about how HIV is tr...ansmitted, when you’re at risk, and how to prevent it. AIDS Awareness Month promotes science-based education to ensure everyone has the facts about HIV/AIDS. #AIDSAwarenessMonth

December 1 7 is National Handwashing Awareness Week. According to the CDC, keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water. The guidance for effective handwashing and use of hand sanitizer was developed based on data from a number of studies. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end twice. #NationalHandwashingAwarenessWeek
