IT'S ALL BEING INSTALLED! After years of advocacy and community design meetings, the concept of putting art on utility boxes in SOMA is now happening! What's being put up, you wonder? The full ABAKADA, Filipino alphabet which has 20 letters. The ABAKADA concept came from families of the FEC Galing Bata program whom provides linguistically sensitive and culturally responsive programming to TK-8th grade students and families in Bessie Carmichael/FEC School.... During the virtual sessions, there were discussions on the designs and how the words for each letter represent and relate to the Philippine culture and our SOMA Pilipinas community. "We hope that this SOMCAN x FEC Galing Bata (GB) collaboration project will provide a sneak peek into the Philippine language, culture, and history. Aside from it being a learning tool, we believe that these flashcards showcase the long-lasting history and continuous presence of the Filipinos in San Francisco. The sentiment behind this project was to expose everyone, enrich the youth, engage families, and empower the community. We are excited for everyone to enjoy this art in the streets of SOMA soon!" ~ Ate Shari, GB staff and Kuya Mark Belocura, SOMA resident, GB alumni and now a GB staff Want to give big love and shout out to our partnered lead artist Mel Vera Cruz for creating the process and designs with the families, to Kristian Kabuay for the baybayin script and to Charlene Tan and Sherwin Rio for installing these. @galingbata @somapilipinas @mel_vera_cruz #WeLiveHere
