Solheim Senior Community 02.11.2020

Solheim residents have amazing stories and life experiences to share. At our recent Adventure Days Summer Camp, campers got to chat with Thoralf Sandy Sandaker. Originally born in Oslo, Norway, Sandy moved to Solheim in April 2018. He shared with campers his experience as a member of Norway’s 1948 Olympic rowing team. The campers were fascinated by his experience and got to see his Olympic ring up close.

Solheim Employee Spotlight: Maria Alfaro joined Solheim in 1985 as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Coming from another community, Maria knew immediately that I’d made the right decision to come to Solheim because the emphasis here is on the residents not just the work. What’s most important to me is being able to spend time with the residents, to love them and not just rush from job to job. Solheim has everything I need and it’s a very special place. Solheim is so fortunate to have caring, dedicated and loyal staff members like Maria, who celebrates 33 years at Solheim this year! Employees like Maria truly embody Good People helping our residents lead a Great Life.

Who would have imagined a senior community would host a summer day camp program for kids? Solheim DID and because we had SO much fun last year- we’re hosting camp AGAIN this summer. Our second summer adventure day camp program will run Monday, July 16th through Friday, July 20th. As you can see from last year’s camp pic, a good time is had by campers and Solheim staff alike. We’re looking forward to kicking off this year’s camp next week and sharing our camp adventures, so be sure to check back for updated pics.

Temperatures are rising so be sure to follow heat safety guidelines. Stay indoors, drink plenty of water and check on loved ones, friends and neighbors regularly. Here are some great pointers from the CDC for avoiding heat stress in older adults.

Resident Spotlight: Retha M., resident since 2016: Solheim has made a positive difference in Retha’s life because It’s better to be around people. Things are taken care of for me that I used to have to do by myself, such as cleaning and cooking meals. There are less problems for me to deal with, and I have peace of mind. I always took care of everything in my home and family, and it’s nice to be taken care of for a change. For those considering a move to a community like Solheim, Retha knows that it’s a big decision, but in the end it’s the right one. Look at everything you pay for things like insurance, home repair, etc. and you will see that you can afford to move, and you should!
