Día de Los Muertos is celebrated throughout Latin America and everywhere with a Latino population. The tradition originated in Mexico and celebrates the lives of the deceased with activities the dead enjoyed in life. This day recognizes death as a natural part of the human experience, a continuum with birth, childhood, and growing up to become a contributing member of the community. Melissa Gomez shares the story about her grandmother, an Inglewood resident, and explains what... Día de Los Muertos means to her and her family. On Día de Los Muertos we believe that the spirit of our loved ones who have passed on, are able to return for one night. On that night we present them with gifts, food and all the familiar things that they loved in this life. My family and I have been making an altar that is over seven feet for over 10 years at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Our original altar started when my grandmother Vicki Urenia passed away. When she passed, I saw the altar as a way to honor her and prepare a place for her to come home. It is a special quiet time I get to spend with her honoring her. My grandma was an avid reader, and a connoisseur of good foods! So, on her altar I always have a meal that she would have enjoyed, sweets and drinks as well as a few of her personal items. We know that this life is just one of the journeys our soul will take. We are not afraid of death. We spread Marigold flowers and burn copal in hopes that the strong scents will help guide our loved ones to their ofrenda (offering). Over the years unfortunately many more family members have passed on as well as my grandfather John Urenia, and so we have added them to our altar. As well as a small altar at the very bottom for our pets. But always at the top of our altar is a picture of our family matriarch, Vicky Urenia. It is a wonderful tradition I encourage everyone to try. It helps the heart heal and remember your loved ones in a special and meaningful way. In honor of #HispanicHeritageMonth coming to an end today here in Los Angeles, we want to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the Latinx and Hispanic communities. #SoFiStadium #Inglewood

Councilman Alex Padilla explains what #HispanicHeritageMonth means to him: Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated in many ways by a diverse and history rich Hispanic community. Personally, I enjoy sharing our culture with others every year during my Annual Classic Car Show at the City of Inglewood’s Hispanic Heritage Festival. Every year we bring out over one hundred of the most unique classic cars to the Festival making it one of the largest car shows in the South Bay. Bringing the community and their families together for events like these which include music, food and games is part of what it means to be Hispanic. I am so proud of the unity displayed by our diverse Hispanic community in the City of Inglewood and I will continue to promote and enjoy all that our community has to offer. #Inglewood #SoFiStadium

Councilman Eloy Morales, Jr. explains what #HispanicHeritageMonth means to him: Hispanic Heritage Month has always been a time to honor those who share my culture, and have improved the quality of life in our country through their courage, leadership, and ingenuity. Now, I know that it is also a time to celebrate the lives of countless Latino immigrants that sacrifice everything to improve the lives of their families. I am proud to have been raised by immigrant parents who sacrificed everything, so that I could have a better life. In Inglewood, the greatness of my story is that it is not unique. Our homes are filled with awesome stories of sacrifice, and success through hard work. This month, we celebrate each and every family that shares the Latino experience. #Inglewood #SoFiStadium
