Are you feeling lucky that your yard is littered with leaves? Please do! Relocating leaves from our lawn, driveway and sidewalk to our garden beds supports fung...i, worms, nematodes, and microbes whose job it is to break down plants and turn them into soil organic matter. Dead leaves also keep moisture in soil and provide a nursery for invertebrates, like butterflies and moths. Under the crumbling moist canopy, caterpillars, earthworms and ants thrive and support many birds during the winter. Recently shed seeds may also be waiting there for hungry birds. Get the kids involved and let them know that leaving leaves is nature’s way of being reborn. See more
