Crawler cranes are mobile cranes that do not require outriggers for stability. Mounted to a chassis with a set of tracks inside, crawler cranes are powerful machines. In fact, they have the ability to lift between 40 tons and 3500 tons!

Overhead cranes are ideal when you need a lot of coverage and don’t have a lot of floor space. The supports for the crane can be built into your building or installed alongside existing support structures to take up as little space as possible.

In crane terminology, rigging is defined as the wire rope slings, alloy steel chains, synthetic rope and web slings, shackles, eye-bolts, and below-hook lifting devices that are used either alone or in combination to attach a load to a lifting device.

Crane safety standards in the United States are established by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. On tower cranes, the shorter horizontal arm is called the machinery arm. This is what contains and carries the crane’s motors and electronics, as well as the large concrete counterweights that help with the lifting of the load.

A crane, according to Merriam-Webster, is a machine for raising, shifting, and lowering heavy weights by means of a projecting swinging arm or with the hoisting apparatus supported on an overhead track.

Do you only have a limited amount of head room? That doesn’t mean that you can’t have an overhead crane. The right crane, such as a top running crane, can still be used even when you have a lower ceiling in your facility.

Cranes are so inextricably linked with industry and innovation that the city of Glasgow preserves a non-functioning giant cantilever crane as a symbol of its engineering heritage. Called the Finnieston, it’s one of only 11 such cranes in the world.

One major improvement in the history of the crane came about around the 4th century BC: the addition of the compound pulley, or a combination of single pulleys in a block. This significantly increased the mechanical advantage of cranes.

During the Middle Ages, there were about 100 large-scale stationery tread wheel and tower harbor cranes in western and northern Europe. Some featured masonry structures, but most were wood and nearly a dozen of them are still in existence.

Mine hoists, as the name implies, help in the movement of materials up and down a mine shaft. The three most common types of mine hoists are drum, friction, and Blair.

The position of a crane can be vital for making sure that the load is lifted and moved into the correct position, which is why cranes can have features like crab steer. In crab steer mode, all of the wheels can be turned in one direction, allowing the crane to maneuver in a confined space.
