For the greater part of my career I have preferred to remain non-didactic, letting my art and its subject speak for itself. It's been important to me that peopl...e experience the art, taking a moment to become intimate with the image and the reality it captures. The intrigue in this approach has always been in seeing the response of the viewer: the flickers of awe, recognition and often sadness... . Emotions that occur upon realizing that these landscapes have been changed by the hand of man. I have travelled the world, spending time in these landscapes. Watching them continue to change, watching us continue to change them. Our collective impact is inevitable, as the population booms so does our need for resources. We are spending the land and seas like currency. The earth’s systems are under threat. Climate change, terraforming, extinction...the list goes on. These are all real events and they're each connected to human impact. My next project Anthropocene documents this very subject. #Anthropocene is literally the age of man and points to man’s impact on the planet. Recent global events have made me feel deeply & passionately that we have to do something. I'd like to take this opportunity to call you, my global and local peers, to action online #dosomn. So I am asking for you to #dosomn for our planet. Whether it's big or small I encourage you to start making a change. Our planet is fragile. Now is the time to take responsibility for our actions. So let's #dosomn, together and make this a global call to action. And let’s acknowledge those that are #doingsomn already. Corporations, individuals, groups let’s look at their positive actions with the hashtag #doingsomn. To quote my Anthropocene co-director Jennifer Baichwal: "The shifting of consciousness is the beginning of change." Edward Burtynsky
