Robert Bruce School partnered with Grocery Outlet on South Broadway again this year to help support local families. Grocery Outlet collected money from November 27th through December 13th to help Robert Bruce students. Thanks to Grocery Outlet's donations, 41 Robert Bruce families each received a $55 gift card that can be used for food, clothing or Christmas gifts from Grocery Outlet. ... "Timmie and Dino, the local owners of Grocery Outlet, have continued to support Robert Bruce School and we are so thankful for them and their business in our community!" said Monica Nuno, a Kindergarten teacher at Robert Bruce who helped organize the event. Many families received this handout last week when they picked up meals at the schools. If you didn't get a copy, it's good information to have. The handout is provided in English and Spanish from the Family Engagement Department.

Photos of a few more Food Service crews. Robert Bruce School's staff is Cece Adams, Jean Anaya, Yadira Ramirez, Sylvia Valdez and Neyffi Noriega. El Camino Junior High's kitchen crew is Debbie Baro, Michael Gutierrez, Azucena Herrera, Yvonne Rubio, Maria Alvarez, Julieta Ramirez, Malia Salcido, Maria Gonzalez, Berenice Orozco and Bart Bottrell.... Thank you to all of our school Food Service and Souza Center kitchen employees for keeping students fed while school campuses are closed. There will not be meals distributed during Winter Vacation (December 21 through January 11). However, when students return to distance learning on Tuesday, January 12, meals will start being available on Fridays. Instead of getting double meals on Thursdays, families will be able to pick up food five days a week at the current locations.

A huge shout out to the members of the Arellanes Junior High Builders Club for making 73 Halloween goodie bags, each filled with a coffee mug, candy and a fun pencil, for the SMBSD school custodians. "The expressions on our custodial team's faces were priceless," said James Michaelis, the custodial supervisor who delivered the treats to all the schools. "The kids really enjoyed doing this," said Tiffany Fife, Builders Club advisor and AJH counselor. "It really was all their idea and work that made it happen."

There is a lot of red out there today for Red Ribbon Week - both with students and staff. Today, many of the schools are holding "wear red day" and students are showing up in their Zoom classrooms and at lunch pick-ups in their best red gear. Some schools, like Arellanes Elementary, Arellanes Junior High, Ontiveros and Alvin, are handing out Red Ribbons, stickers, pencils and other anti-drug/alcohol/tobacco incentives to the children this week.

SMBSD schools are getting ready to celebrate Red Ribbon Week to encourage students to avoid drugs, alcohol and tobacco/vaping. Red Ribbon Week starts Monday. Many students will be dressing up for a daily theme or doing on-line activities with their teachers and classmates. Teaching skills for positive life choices is something SMBSD schools and teachers do all year long. Red Ribbon Week is an opportunity to make those lessons unique, memorable and visible to the community.
