5 Tips For Moving Back Home There's a new perspective emerging as more adult children are moving back in with mom and dad due in large part to the coronavirus and it's important to identify what challenges may come your way in light of no rent and free food. Here are 5 tips for a smooth transition back to your childhood bedroom:... 1. Give Yourself A Break | Remember that you're one of the millions of people who are going through this same experience. According to the US Census Bureau, 52% of young adults in 2020 lived with their parent(s) - a record number, even outweighing the stats from the Great Depression. 2. Pay it Forward | Whether you're able to contribute monetarily by picking up the dry cleaning and buying groceries or physically by doing chores like yard work, take responsibility for your portion of the household duties. 3. Be Courteous | This may be the home you grew up in but empty-nesters have likely created a new routine for themselves since you left. Try not to jump back into old habits, respect any changes, and ask questions. Communication during this time is key. 4. Make Time For Them | If it's your mom's dream to have you back home then make time for the two of you. Sit down with your parents for breakfast rather than rushing your cereal back to the bedroom. Help cook dinner or chat with your parents as they prepare it. It's those moments that they cherish most. 5. Make Room | Downsizing from a whole apartment down to a bedroom can be difficult, especially if you don't want to discard your furniture or decor. Rather than filling up the garage (that they worked so hard to clear out once you moved away) consider getting a storage unit. Oftentimes there are student discounts or special offers. Whether it's Zoom, Skype, Google Hangouts or FaceTime it’s important to note that how you interview via video will be a much larger qualification because it’s now the most common (and sometimes only) form of communication within companies. They want to see that you’re able to arrive on time, come prepared, answer questions easily and still be yourself - which isn’t always easy for people when they know they’re on camera. So that being said, we did our research and here are th...e best practices when you’re preparing to interview for a job in 2021. Pick your spot. If you’re familiar with Room Rater on Twitter then you’ll know that where you’ve decided to set up for the video call is very important. Make sure you’re not easily distracted, the wifi is strong and keep in mind that the person on the other end of the call can see everything behind you. Even that weird collection of porcelain cats on your bookshelf Video check. If you’re on an Apple product then you have access to Photobooth - open it and see how the lighting and position is but keep in mind that each video service may look a little different than what you see here. If you’re on a PC or tablet then you can easily set up a mock-meeting on one of the video service platforms to check your specifications too! Audio check. Test the microphone and speakers you’ll be using for the call. Are your Airpods charged? Get dressed. Whether that means putting on makeup for the first time in 8 months or slipping into something other than sweatpants is up to you but do your part to show that you arrive prepared. Join early. A few minutes before the interview is set to begin you can enter early. This will give you an opportunity to see the camera angle, lighting, background, etc on this specific video conferencing platform. Print Your Resume. Print your resume out or have it up on a tab during your interview so you can easily reference any questions that they may have about it. Remote experience(d). If you’ve worked remotely in previous positions make sure you state that. Many businesses have never worked with remote employees and it’ll give them some confidence knowing this isn’t your first rodeo. We hope this helped you and we wish you luck on your remote interview!
