Adam Kendall a California-based historian and is a full member of Quatuor Coronati Lodge. His scholarship focuses on the cultural role of Freemasonry and fraternalism, particularly in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is the editor of The Plumbline, the quarterly bulletin of the Scottish Rite Research Society, and is involved with several other Masonic research societies. The Fraternal Frontiers of Benjamin Hyam, Third Grand Master of California This presentation introduces Benjamin Daniel Hyam, one of California Masonry's most fascinating and misunderstood characters. We will follow him through the Mexican-American War, competing Masonic grand lodges, the California Gold Rush, the founding of the Grand Lodge of California, the American Civil War, and obscure high degree rites. We will encounter famous Californians and notorious esotericists while rediscovering a subtle network that links California Masonry to an expansive historical fraternal lineage. Drawing from popular California history and rare primary sources, Hyam’s personality and motivations are contrasted with the popular mythologies of the American Wild West, as sparsely populated regions yielded to a massive international migration and an often-bitter contest for dominance and authority.
