Tell the California Coastal Commission we have waited long enough for State Parks to produce an environmentally acceptable management plan for the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area (ODSVRA). It’s time to amend the coastal permit for the park and begin phasing out off-road activity on the dunes. At the March 18 hearing, the CA Coastal Commission will finally consider requiring a phase out of off-roading at the dunes and can amend that management plan to favor differ...ent types of recreational use that won’t harm coastal resources, like car-camping on the beach and hike-in/bike-in camping. Off-road enthusiasts will continue to be able to ride at eight other State Parks that allow vehicular recreation, as well as at nearly 70 other public OHV areas in California. According to a new study by Cal Poly associate professor Pratish Patel, the coronavirus-related closing of the Oceano Dunes to off road vehicle traffic had no significant impact on San Luis Obispo County’s economy. In fact, the study found lodging revenue in Oceano increasing during the closure. And "average monthly transient occupancy tax revenue in Oceano actually increased in 2020, when compared to 2019."
