Yoda is a wise Jedi (okay okay he’s the last Grand Master of the Jedi Order) and HE KNOWS THINGS. Help prevent crimes of opportunity and take Yoda’s advice on this one: remove all your stuff from the car and lock up each time you park, especially at night.
While #SLOCounty will not move forward to the Red Tier this week, our COVID-19 case rate continues to decline. Unfortunately, our test positivity rate has incre...ased among more vulnerable groups, which is why we are not moving forward. We continue to work hard to improve test positivity across SLO County and among more vulnerable communities here, but we need your help to slow the spread of this disease even further so we can move to the Red Tier and enjoy even more activities here in our county. #TierTuesday See more

This heartbreaking milestone comes less than two weeks after the winter holiday season. COVID-19 is now the leading cause of death in the US, as well in SLO Cou...nty. This virus has claimed more than 100 local lives, said Dr. Penny Borenstein, County Health Officer. Those are mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles, children and grandparents who were not ready to die and whose deaths were, in fact, preventable.

Between December 1, 2020 and January 7, 2021 SLOPD responded to 6 DUI accidents in the city, several that caused injuries. These accidents are 100% preventable. If drinking alcohol, always designate a driver or use rideshare apps to get home safely.
***MEDIA RELEASE*** ***Updated at 6:32 pm to correct the spelling of the suspects name. WHAT: Arrest for Criminal Threats and Brandishing a Knife ... WHERE: Sierra Vista Hospital, 1010 Murray St. WHEN: January 8, 2021, at 8:45 am SUSPECT: Daniel Marcom, 51-year-old, transient from San Luis Obispo VICTIMS: 77-year-old male, resident of Atascadero 53-year-old male, resident of San Luis Obispo DEPARTMENT CONTACT: Lieutenant Robert Cudworth 805.594.8026 On January 8th, 2021, at approximately 8:45 am, San Luis Obispo Police Department officers responded to Sierra Vista Hospital for a report of a patient threatening others in the hospital with a knife. There were two victims involved in this incident, one was a patient of the hospital who shared a room with the suspect and the other was a doctor who was treating the suspect. This morning, suspect Daniel Marcom became angry with the patient he was sharing a hospital room with, and unprovoked, Marcom brandished a knife, threatened to harm the victim, and uttered a racial epithet at the victim causing the Police to be called. Before that the doctor treating Marcom had asked Marcom to be quiet, Marcom’s response was to threaten the doctor and uttered a racial epithet directed at the doctor. When officers arrived, the situation had stabilized, and no argument was occurring. After the officer’s investigation, Marcom was arrested on two counts of criminal threats (hate crime) and brandishing a knife. He was transported to San Luis Obispo County jail without incident and booked. Marcom’s charges are listed as (2) PC 422, (2) PC 422.6, PC 417, and bail is set at $50,000. Daniel Marcom is listed as a local transient with several hundred contacts with the San Luis Obispo Police Department dating back to 2004. The calls involving Marcom have been related to his alcohol use, trespassing, and mental health. He is also listed as an Officer Safety risk for threats to officers from an incident in 2010.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department Conducting DUI Patrols Additional officers from the San Luis Obispo Police Department will be out on patrol December 11 and 12 from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, The San Luis Obispo Police Department is committed to keeping the public safe when they need to run essential errands,... Safety is paramount, but especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, Sergeant Jeff Booth said. We are all in this together and want everyone to be as safe as possible when they are out. One way to do that is by not driving impaired. The San Luis Obispo Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. Always follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving or operating heavy machinery, which includes driving a car. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal. If you plan on drinking or taking medications that may impact your ability to drive safely, plan on staying at home. Driving sober is your safest bet. Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with DUI will pay a stiff price: an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Being homeless is not a crime. SLOPD does not and will not arrest people for being unhoused. There are times when arrests are made or citations issued to homeless people for municipal code and penal code violations. The interactions between officers and a homeless person often leads to offering the person resources for services (via our amazing social worker John Klevins) including shelter, family reunification, medical assistance, drug and alcohol counseling, and mental health care/services. These services cannot be forced on anyone, they can only be offered. SLOPD is committed to continuing to work with allied organizations to provide needed services while helping to maintain the quality of life in this community for all citizens.
